Am all for continuity, but not when that continuity is constant Rammel and disappointment. Here we have a player who we cannot agree on what his best position is. Never mind once we have argued that for the next ten pages, but then spend the next ten pages arguing if he is actually the best English man playing that position. The sad thing is we cannot even put up a viable option of another captain.
English football is in a dire state 🙁

The trouble with this mantle of England captain seems to be that it insulates the holder from the usual logical considerations of tactics and more importantly form. Players should be picked on form. It's no good picking strikers who are in the middle of a goal drought nor is it smart to distort the tactical shape of a team just so that the Rooney or any other captain keeps his place.

Always a problem for the England manager trying to fit square pegs in round holes and Rooney has been Hodgson's and now Big Sam's main one. Personally I think a keeper, especially at international level is always a good choice. I know it's different at the moment with Harts situation, but usually it's a settled player. They can see the game in front of them playing out, but I also think to some degree it's nothing more than an armband wearing exercise. Not sure who else I'd give it to over Rooney though

Correct. It basically guarantees his place in the team all the while he remains captain.

👍 Yup

In this day and age a captain is almost entirely irrelevant; it's basically ceremonial.

I personally would adopt the Italian method (I think it's them) and give it to the most capped player for each game. So that would be Rooney when he plays but it could also be many others.

I'm with Kellfire. My worry with Rooney is that Allardyce has backed himself into a corner by making a big deal about it. He should have specified it was a loose arrangement that would change regularly. I just don't see where Rooney fits into the team anymore.

I don't think any international squad needs a nominated captain. In these teams a lot of people a leaders, they don't need a title for it.

I would give the ribbon to the most capped player on the pitch, the leaders of the team don't need it to be vocal.

Making Beckham the captain was a major error because it meant he had to start or not be in the squad. And due to that you lost an amazing squad player. And with Rooney the error is repeated.

I my opinion the captain should always be a centreback, from there he controls the defence and can see all in front of him and he can lead by example. It worked when I played (centrehalf!!) and when running a team..
