I have had a few whinges on here about the lack of roll ups at clubs around me and, with the comps not being drawn either, how hard it is to build a decent pool of potential playing partners.

Well, after having my playing partner cancel this morning due to illness leaving unable to find a game I have decided that it is now time for me to actually do something about it. Problem is, I have no idea how to start.

Are roll ups club sanctioned or normally arranged by the club or the pro? Do I need to lobby the club or the pro to set something up or do I need to approach the club myself and declare my intention to try and set something up? Do I need to involve the club at all out of etiqutte or do I just start trying to spread the word, pick a turn up time and see what happens. We have no tee times so there is no issue there, I just want to make sure that, if I am trying to set up a time for people without a regular game to pitch up that I do not put anyone's nose out of joint.

Usually on a sat or sunday you will get players just turning up on the off chance they will get a game.Your best bet is to turn up early and wait for a 3 ball and ask to play, once they see you turning up every week your face will soon fit and they will start to accomodate you, and you will become a regular, thats what happened to me.

Problem with my club is that alot of the longer standing members have there own 3/4 balls that turn up at a set time, head straight for the first tee and get on with their game. What I want to start is a something where new members or those without a game that week can pitch up, put their ball in and know they will get a game. Through that they may then buld up a big enough group of friends to phone round and ensure they have a game at weekends but it would be somewhere to start. The problem that my club has is a lot oflong standing members who sort games out amongst themselves and whilst they are all friendly enough it is not easy to get a game and the fact that no comps are drawn does not make it any easier.

I would change clubs but all of the clubs around me are a bit like this.

I understand where your coming from, but then you start getting seperate sections in the club, and that can lead to problems, sometimes.I just turned up first of all,and into a regular 20 odd players but i just asked and got a game, now im a regular, and other players do turn up and they are soon excepted. Also then you become part of the club itself, not just a ouple of individuals.

Hi
Our club has a roll up on a Sat and Sun if no comps are playing.
Anyone who wants to play should be at the club by 8.45am and they put their ball into a bag and random 3/4 balls are picked out depending how many people turn up. The format changes from week to week but you are generally playing as a team rather than individuals.
That way you get to play with lots of different members.

rather like a roll up I've been reading this thread and decided to invite myself along - nobody seems to be grasping the point here, that if there's no organised way of turning up to get a game it can be quite difficult - to answer the OP I'd have word with the pro and sec to let them know what you're planning and if you get no argument get on and do it, guaranteed there'll be plenty of people thinking exactly what you are and will turn up for a game.....

Our club operates two systems, one is a roll up

In the summer months 5 tee times from 5.30 are unbookable and are available for any members to play in groups of 4. Players turn up before tee off and the membership manager groups up people who have been chatting/are of similar age/standing alone

It comes with free trial balls or other gifts on some occasions but no one knows when! (was some z stars one evening last summer)

To help people without regular games at weekends every other tee time from 8.30 to 10 is a "walk on"

They can only be reserved on the day and often a queue forms from about 30 mins before the pro shop opens in the summer! Does mean an early morning for me every weekend day ( i use them a lot!) but I am used to it now and I often get back home before 2pm on both days!

Our club fully embraces roll ups as they see it as an ideal way for new members in particular to get regular games and meet a lot of members very quickly. We have a number of small groups that go out early on Saturday but there is also a main roll upthat goes out late morning. In theory they are all open to anyone. However with the smaller ones the newbie would normally only have to ask if he can join them for a game to get in.

Within the large roll up which most of the "regular" members play in there is a society within that which a lot of the single figure golfers set up toamongst themselves. They have their own bets etc but in simple terms everyone turns up for the main event sticks £2 or £3 in the kitty and depending on size its winner takes all or top three get the cash.

I think if you wanted to set one up the best thing to do (assuming your club don't have pre-booked times) is to put a notice up int llocker room asking if anyone fancies it and give a time and see what happens. I wouldn't have thought you'd need club permission unless they get funny about having any form of monetary betting

I suppose our swindle is a roll up, 9-00 to 9:30 tee time booked on Sunday, turn up, pay your green fee and hand your card to the swindle sec. Job done.

Also they run a weekly prize fund, £5.00 per player gives 5 nearest the pins and money for first and second in the stableford points

turning up and hanging around hoping to be included in an established group is not easy. true you will probably be accepted, that week, but the next and the next?

I'd love it if mine truly had a Saturday roll-up, but having to book tee-times at weekends mitigates against it.

Greg, if you get desperate, you should still have my number

Thanks mate, was a little late this week as was just pulling in at the club when my mate cancelled.

That said, I am now really determined to set something up for my benefit and for the benefit of the club even if it is just for out of season. I suppose that there is nothing during the summer because there is a comp every week and it is slightly easier to be made up into a group but even then, how much better would it be, bearing in mind that comps are never drawn and always in your own group, if you could pitch up and generally be assured that there will be others around to enter the comp with. I can see this doing wonders for member retention and the general atmosphere at the club. Not really done anything to 'give something back' to the club so setting up something like this may be ideal.

I'm sure Hawkeye will correct me but he is already well established after one round in my normal roll up. OK we were depleted this week but at least as a newbie he knows he's got a regular game. I will be introducing him to the bigger one (where most of the top players go) in due course

That was the point of the post, when you do not have regular roll ups in place then it is difficult to find games and integrate. If you have organised roll ups it is far easier.
