Ricky Fowler at US Open !

i think it could be a fitting tribute, but not from Fowler.

Fowler looks consistently ridiculous in everything he wears, i think its probably the ears tucked into his hat with the flat bill. its impossible to take that seriously.

Payne Stewart dressed distinctively but with a touch of class. fowler just dresses distinctively.

I think this is about the tribute rather than who does it or what you think he looks like. Sometimes the reason is more important than the action.

A lead post on the first day of a major and it is about what the guy was wearing.

BBC Sports.

'and here is the news from the US Open at Pinehurst, one golfer is wearing a pretty pink pullover whilst another is, believe it or not, wearing last seasons brown Footjoys.'

:D:D:D

Hmmm

General thread on US Open - 645 views and 18 posts.
Thread on Ricky Fowler's outfit - 1000+ views and 40+ posts.

So can we conclude that the talking point of day one wasn't Kaymer's 65 or Matthew Fitzpatrick or the set up of the course but Ricky's "knickers" (as I believe they are known stateside)? :D

By the way, I liked the outfit. Good for him.

i think the tribute falls flat, if the tribute involves someone looking ridiculous.

i always liked payne stewart, i didn't particularly like Fowler's tribute.

Yep, I think your going to have to conclude that this is down to you and your, perhaps dislike of Ricky, your just not going to be happy whatever on this subject but at no point have made it clear why it falls flat or why you don't like it or how one would distinguish between copying and a tribute... It seems a lot like you would like things to be much more muted and a lot more British... Just relax, its pretty simple, the guy wanted to pay respect to a pretty special player and person at a spot on location and time.

What exactly was wrong with his tribute ?

So a young man decided to honour his idol and a very well respected golfer in Payne Stewart by wearing the style he used too whilst also appealing to a younger generation and instead of being applauded for the respect he is showing he is instead being critisized for it ?

I have never seen any person of a younger generation, ever dress anything like Rick did yesterday, on any course I've played on, I just don't see how it would appeal, in fact think it wold put youngsters off!

But now with Fowler wearing that outfit there will be people grabbing it of the shelves

I really can't see what the problem is with what Fowler did ?

Why does it matter that you've never seen anyone where that stuff? From what I remember it wasn't exactly common place when Payne Stewart wore it and would probably be considered by youngsters of the day to look a bit stupid.

What you think of what it looks like, what any of us think of what it looks like is totally irrelevant. It was Fowler's tribute to a legend of the game. That's all that matters.

Joel Sjöholm regularly wears them on the European tour.

My OP only asked whether forum members would venture out dressed like it. I don't see anything wrong with having your idol and wishing to copy him but, to be truthful, I thought Payne Stewart looked a dick on the course too -I'd like to stress that is a personal opinion of his dress code and would be the first to acknowledge that he was, by all accounts, a really special person.

Just for the record 1959 Open Gary Player wore a pair of breeks with one leg white and the other black.

1964 Open Doug Sanders was dressed head to foot in primrose yellow.

Move along please...nothing to see here.

So basically it's just a dislike of plus fours -

And yes would venture out like that and have done before

I have a pair of plus fours that have been worn on various charity days etc.
