Yes, he placed it and then walked up past a bunker to look at his intended landing area (I guess), he then looked round to see the previously still ball roll back into the water
Yeah, I was just pointing out robinthehood's standard belligerent pedantry that's all.

It's a shame this thread isn't in the rules section, I'd be interested to see what the rules experts think of this suggestion.

Well said Bob

Load of tosh, nothing wrong with the current rule.

The ball was in play so the ruling is correct just as if it had been his second or third shot and the ball had stopped then rolled into the water after a minute or two it's still a penalty

We know.
That's not in dispute.
It's the sanity of the rule that people are discussing....

So you think he should get a free drop ?

What about the poor sod who's ball might have stopped short then rolled in should he get a free drop as its technically the same for him is it not

Then the guy who's ball hangs over the hole then falls after 5-8 seconds should he be made to place the ball and then putt it

It's not one of my favourite rules and I can see both sides...
I always struggle to see why sometimes there is such a distinction between what happens on the green as opposed to anywhere else on the course.

What the ultra conservative self appointed custodians of the rules do not understand is that it is exactly things like this that put people off golf.

You guys are too into golf and it’s too ingrained for you to see the bigger picture. People outside of golf and the casual 1 round a month players hate this kind of stuff and think it’s a joke.

The rules should be open for common sense to be applied when applicable, to be penalised twice for essentially one shot is laughable bordering on madness.

You hit the ball in to a bunker, you fail to get it out, should you then have that shot cancelled and get the next go for free and so on and so on until you get the ball out of the bunker.

Are you being serious?? As if someone would take a few drops, it rolls, they place the ball and then it rolls again but goes in the hole?? What the heck are the chances of that ever happening! What a ridiculous argument.

The rule is simple.....the ball was deemed to be in play so then it rolled into the water so what's hard to understand its another penalty it's not hard to work out really in fact it's simple.

No of course not, you should go and practice your bunker shots in that case. If you have been penalised a stroke already and your ball moves under it's own weight before you take your next stroke you should get a free drop. Even if your ball rolled closer onto a green it should still be redropped it makes the rule fair and consistent. Too many dinosaurs who can't see change and can't apply common sense, everything that's bad about golf

It is pretty simple if you want to apply it like that, it's also pretty simple(for some) to apply common sense and use their head. Ball should not be deemed in play until the player takes their stance to play the shot, that would be simple

Are you doing this on purpose?? Why can't people understand the difference between knowing a rule and questioning a rule? It's not hard to work out, it really IS simple.

Why should a ball that's been dropped into play be treated differently to a ball that was struck in to play. That's what you are suggesting.

The second part was not about the ball rolling in the hole but the water, sorry you didn't understand that part, now I can see where you might not understand simple rules.
