1 hr 15 minutes passed from pillar to post this afternoon while trying to speak to them on an urgent matter.

''I am sorry your Accounts Ref Number isn't being recognised by our systems so we can't help''

'Ah so the fact no-one will speak to me means that I can disregard the penalty notice when it comes due to you lot not being able to speak with me' I replied.

''Errrr,I don't know,I really cannot help you'' came the reply.

I then asked if this is indeed the helpline I have come through to and yes was the reply so I asked again what can you do to help...........nothing she replied.

I asked to speak to someone higher in authority to which she said 'there's na-one'.

Gave up,like talking to a wall........fecking helpline??You couldn't make it up..........I am aff hame, well f##@ed off!!

I have never seen such matchingly high levels of incompetence of those at HMRC.

Last year at the beginning of January, I got a letter from HMRC collections saying that I was overdue a payment on account for Self-Assessment of over £3000 and despite their earlier (phantom) reminders this had not paid.

They advised that bailiffs would be attending my premises to remove goods.

The problem was that my payment wasnt actually due to be paid until the end of January.

I spoke to my accountant about this and it transpired that he had recieved an identical threatening letter about his failure to pay as yet undue tax.

Did we get an apology after an age on the phone trying to sort it? No.

Whoever was responsible for the IT aspect of HMRC is a clown of previously untold proportions, still, a computer glitch that terrorises people is no excuse really and definately does not excuse not getting an apology.

Try combining them with the student loans company.

Although repayments are collected monthly through HMRC, they only talk to each other in April and 1 year behind.

So if come April you have £1 left before you're cleared, you can end up paying a whole years worth of contributions, which can easily be a few grand, then you have to wait ages and fight to get it back!

I've just received a statement from them saying that if I don't pay the outstanding balance in full by 31st Jan then I may be fined and will have to pay accrued interest on the outstanding amount.

How much?

£0.30. Yes 30 pence.

It's going to cost me 32p just for a stamp and goodness knows how much it will cost them to process the cheque etc. In fact, it's already cost them more in postage.

And the tossers are mentioning fines & interest before it is even overdue!

Drives me up the wall.
