Retrieving a card from the Comp Box

Yawn! No need to go over this argument again, the lines are drawn. I’d apply common sense and not disqualify someone for a stupid admin mistake that clearly had zero impact on their score.

It’s a very hard thing to do when sorting out comps - it would be great to do as you say but where do you draw the line though and you have to be fair to all. You also have to be careful to not to set a precedent as well

What I did was the comps where you have someone there to hand it to - they do a quick check , any cards without signature or HC etc the player is asked to correct any errors.

But any scorecard that is entered into the locked box is classed as completed so must have everything correct

I'm with you here.
13. Returning Score Card A player’s score card is deemed officially returned to England Golf when they have left the recording office/area.
Most clubs would have a problem with that. England Golf's recording office is usually a large trailer parked near the route from the 18th to the clubhouse. Occasionally it is a dedicated room in the clubhouse. But it is always attended and the recorders check the card minutely before asking the player to formally return it.

Why would anyone bother signing at all? Why are cards signed?

How common is common sense. If common sense was common, then most people wouldn’t make the kinds of decisions they do every day. People wouldn’t buy stuff they can’t afford. They wouldn’t smoke cigarettes or eat junk food. They wouldn’t gamble. In other words, people wouldn’t do the multitude of things that are clearly not good for them.

Seems lime your doomed if you follow the rules or your doomed if you don't.

I would be interested how FD would deal with the member who challengers her decision especially the one that knows that they have been demoted to second place in a board comp.

Well the only board comps are club championships and they tend to be matchplay.

If someone moaned that I allowed someone in the bar to sign their unsigned card I’d probably shrug my shoulders and suggest they lighten up.

Sure maybe my attitude would change if I was in this situation and it ended up being an argument but I’d be surprised if that happened.

If you read the full decision on rule 6.6C it throws a bit of clarity on some of the things being discusses here. Part of the decision was posted earlier, but the rest of it not posted is interesting and relates directly to what is being discussed.

We’ll apply common sense. A radical concept in a golf club, I know!

Personally, if i was processing scorecards, noticed one hadn’t been signed and the player was still in the bar I’d just go and get her to sign it.
Are you actually on your club's comps committee?

I'm with you on this.

It's a pity some humans wont use the brains that distinguish us from other animals

We tend to be a bit on the lenient side when we are having a fun 4BBB event and cards are being taken and checked as the players come in to the lounge.

I usually take a quick glance at the card before I accept it to check it has been signed and will often ask the player "has it been signed?"

We sometimes seek out the pair to correct errors or to confirm scores.

We take a much more stringent line for major comps and Opens.

I'm sure practical realities would conflict with my starry optimism if I was doing it for real.

No, you would probably do what I did and change the definition of scoring area and returned cards to reflect the reality of a modern club......a card is returned if it's placed in the box, or handed to the professional team to be entered into the computer, and the player has left the club (clubhouse and carpark).

Sounds like a good way of doing things!
