Nightmare today. Playing in a qualifier. Stableford, White tees. Started par, par. Then just walking down the third, my back goes. From nowhere.

I could just about swing ok and managed another par. But putting and chipping was killing me. Hit a crap tee shot on the fourth and had to throw in the towel.

Long walk back to the clubhouse to withdraw and scratch my name off the 5 club competition sheet for tomorrow. :(

It's right in the middle of my back, right between the bottom of my shoulder blades and it's definitely muscular.

I got the other half to rub some Ibuleve on it which helped a little but I'm not really sure what to do next. Keep it moving and keep trying to stretch it out or just lie down and let it get better on its own?

Anyone know anything about such things?

sympathies mate, I often get a nerve /muscle pain in the same place, deep freeze cold gel a good hour before you play helps if you have to play.Do you do a few stretches before playing, i do and get slated for it but it helps.

I can sympathise.Done my colar bone/shoulder in last week and tried to play again during the week.Managed a crappy 9 holes and resigned myself to a week or two off.Not ideal given we've battled through winter conditions and greens looking forward to the spring and when it comes we're crocked.

Specialist mate its your best option, hope it gets better soon.

Blimey, it's not that bad! A few days and it should be fine. Just keen to minimise the time off. Hoping to make my Inter-Club debut on Thursday, you see.

When I did mine a few weeks ago I kept it loose with a hot water bottle on it and took lots of ibuprofen to reduce the swelling. I had some good stuff called naproxyn left over from an injury last year (and in date) which really helped with the pain. Try to keep moving and be patient

Possible rib problem mate, I had something similar and chiropractor said it was not back but ribs. Frozen peas may not be the best idea, maybe some heat pads would be better.
Good luck mate, hope it better soon.

Been playing with a muscular strain in the back in the left shoulder blade for 2 weeks now. Not affecting the golf too much, but driving (car) was agony. It's affecting a nerve and I've got pain down my left arm.
Got myself to the Physio for 2 sessions....on the anti inflammatories, and I bought myself a TENS machine from Lloyds pharmacy. Best thing I ever did. It has 12 programmes including tapping, kneading and massage and combinations of all three. Also has heat input. I'm using it pretty much all the time, at work, at home, even in the car set on low!!

It's made a massive difference, the pain has pretty much gone and I even managed a 5 over gross medal last week!!
Cost me £40 and it can be used off the mains or batteries. Thoroughly recommended.

You need to put cold onto such injuries immediately or pretty soon after the event - this helps to reduce the blood flow in the short term and reduce the spread of the inflammation.

Once you are a few hours in then the damage is done, you need to keep it warm, apply heat if needed (hot water bottle etc) and give it a rest for a day or two.

Once you are not really aware of it when at rest you need to try some gentle move and see if it stays quite while you build the activity levels back up again.

I didn't know that about the cold. I'll get some frozen peas in for next time!

It seems the more I move, the better it is. It is definitely a lot better this morning. Yesterday, I needed to sit in a hot bath for 45mins just to loosen up but today was much better.

The problem is I've got a stinking cold so I feel like staying in bed but, if I do that, my back hurts. Just can't win. And, my god, it hurts when I sneeze!

I've just been doind odd stretches every now and again and just trying to keep mobile.

I can't say what you should do as I'm not an expert, but I get lower back problems (muscular) and my chiropractor told me to use ice on it to reduce inflamation.

As Alec says, stretching before and after the round is important as well to loosen the muscles, joints & limbs.

Hope it gets sorted soon.

I'm a lower back injury sufferer and have to say Sports Physio has sorted me out, he's done more good in a couple of months than Docs and NHS Physio has done in 10 years.

Muscles in my lower back spasm and that then puts pressure on my pelvis and lower disc which get knackered.

If it is muscular, keep it moving.
