i won our captains day last year with 42 pts (off 14). this year i had a near handicap 35(off 12) ,i had 19 0n front 9 and 16 on back 9, but here lies my problem i pared 8,9,10,11,12,13, all with shots ergo 18 pts on 6 holes, i only scraped 4 pts on the last 5 holes, to say i was ****** off was an understatment( there was no more toy's in my pram according to my playing partner joe ) i was thinking i had could have it again after 13 holes this year. so it got me thinking how many club golfers have managed to retain a trophy.or has there been many dissapointment's like mine.43 was the eventual winner . but i've always next year

It's very hard to win a comp let alone retain one. I've been lucky enough over the last 4 years to retain 2 different comp's. The best one was the club championship last year.

On the 2nd of August this year I shall be going for 3 in a row, which has never been done before in our club. So fingers crossed. Watch this space!!!!

Well, I've never done either. I congratulate you on your success and commiserate with you on not finishing well this time around.

the club champ is the holy grail at my place it's over 36 ( on the sameday ) holes but you have to be 8 or better before you can enter it, in my first year at the club i won acomp with nett 68 then 2 week's later a nett 65 (the nett championship) bring on that glory day's

I agree that the club championship is/should be the pinnacle of any club but I'm a realist and know I'll never win the scratch even and therefore the championship itself. However I do think the handicap prize is up for grabs and makes a suitable alternative. This year my club is switching from 36 holes in one day to 18 on Saturday, a cut and then 18 on Sunday for those left in.

I've managed to win one major at my club (gold board event) and numerous stablefords and medals but not defended anything.

From the trophy boards at some of the courses we play as a society, it isn't that uncommon. More than one trophy won by the same names as many as 5 out of 7 years, and at some places winning board trophies seems to be a family business.
