Representing your club

How many of you have had the oppertunity or experience to represent your club and was it what you expected....
Iv heard heaps of good and bad stories form our club as i suppose can be matched also in other clubs about favouritism and the like but its some thing that when i joined our club i said to myself that one day i would love the pleasure of representing it at a club level....

What worries me is how much commitment is involved and is it really worth all the effort?...
Is it something that would make you a better player or can it ruin your game?
This is a piece taken from our noticeboard and i am aware that some of the dates are passed but there will be more in the future....

East Clare Men's Teams 2011

The selection process for choosing golfers to represent the East Clare in 2011 starts on Sunday 27th Feb @ 4:30pm. All interested players are asked to attend. The initial session will consist of an introduction to the Team Managers for 2011 and a short game program lasting approx. 60 minutes. The purpose of the short game program is to enable you to evaluate and therefore improve your short game. There will be another Session on Sunday 6th March at 4:30pm and thereafter the team managers will run training sessions & matches at regular intervals. There are 6 different Interclub adult competitions that East Clare Teams compete in. Most golfers who have competed over the years will reflect on their efforts representing East Clare as being among their most cherished golfing moments. It isn’t always easy and the highs are often matched and exceeded by the lows however it is the most genuine team competitive environment that club golfers can aspire to. If you are selected on a Panel then you will be expected at all times to be mindful that you are an ambassador of East Clare Golf Club. Strict Codes of Dress and Conduct reflect this. If you think you have what it takes to represent your Club both on and off the course then we very much look forward to seeing you on Sunday 27th Feb. For those who cannot make this initial session, remember we will be running a second introductory session on Sunday 6th March and regular sessions thereafter. Jesus Kid thats a bit much is it not i've played for my club loads of times you put your name on a list and they pick the team simples.
Have played some cracking courses ,tho no pressure just go out and enjoy it,even tho its competative is not that serious.
Some clubs get right up themselves don't they

It's all good fun...you Paddys take the Cups & Shields things far too seriously though, if some clubs got to the All Ireland in the wrong thing they'd probably go bust the amount of money they chuck at things...

No one this side of the water probably has any comprehension of what you are on about, as there is nothing at that compares (not even Daily Mail or Mail on Sunday)....

We tend to have a first and second team which are pretty much picked by the captains committee and are usually the top golfers but there again they are for things like the county scratch league etc so it makes sense. However we do have an active diary of social games which are open to anybody wishing to put their name down.

These are 4 ball better ball events of varying standards with a meal after. Although the game itself is always competitive, the overall atmosphere is about having fun. Preference is given to those playing home games when the away fixture comes up.

We do have other events like the Hillman which is a team event and has different handicap categories in it (0-5, 6-9, 10-14 and 15-18 max) and so you need to pick a player for each category. Again these tend to go to the same old faces but there is no way our club would ever organise as something as formal as the OP with training sessions and evaluations.

Done it, was fantastic, won my match 4&3, was even match until the 9th where I holed out from about 30 yards with my 60* and they never won a hole from then on.

I cannot wait to do it again this year, the pro and the captain have both said I should get a few goes this year as they think my game is very good, far better than my handicap.

Its probably the most fun you will have in a competitive round of golf i think . Good laugh, get to play good courses(most of the time) for free and also you get a good match along with it. Obviously your expected to win all the time but as long as you try your best no one will complain.

I have played Junior cup and Holt shield for the two clubs I have been a member of.
Its pretty easy to get by with only a few bits of advice....
Wear what you are told, be at the courses early, be polite in victory and gracious in defeat and take a pint when offered.

Correct Owen the best one we have is against Carnoustie away game on the Championship ,fed and watered for heehaw superb

Ya Steve,
I was thinking the same myself...Its pretty competitive here around my way...I think that a fair few of the clubs are within an hours drive from each other so there is a fair bit of "We're better than you" schoolyard shite.

I was talking with a mate that i played with sunday morning and he had said the exact same thing as you....In years gone by it was a case of pick your partner and playing against 2 others from your club in a foursomes format.

But they seem to have done away with that this year...Not sure why!
It is something i would like to aspire to do but if its that much hassle its hardly work the headache.

We have an A and B team and the club emails everyone who is a member and asks if they wish to be considered for the matches. It's then up to the captains to choose from the players available.

Kid2 it sounds a heck of a lot of effort just to represent your club. I hate to see what the membership joining process is for the club...???

Oh yeshhh, the steak dinners!
Played in a team match against Royal Belfast once years ago at their course and when we finished, fairly late on were ushered into the clubhouse in full suit and tie. Sat down had the starter and then the steaks came out, blood still pumping out of them, needless to say I love my steak as much as the next man, but asked if it could be done a little more and put the poor thing out of its misery, got the reply "sorry, Chef is away home". This was THE only time I have never finished a steak and have changed to liking them very well done now such was the amount of blood on the plate, it looked more like a heavy handed jus! haha.

You obviously don't know what our local league is all about then....on the charge for 3 in a row this year and we'll be doing the utmost to secure at least 1 cup to go with it too!!

The pierce purcell has a combined handicap of 27 and the lowest has to be 12 from what I can remember, ideally you have a 13 and a 14 together.

I was under the impression county golf was the position most competitive golfers in England mainly wanted to be, Scotland to a degree too.
