How do you rediscover your form after enduring a slump?

All through the winter I've been playing well, posting a decent stableford total each week in our Winter League, and have been generally happy with how I've been playing although I know there's plenty room for improvement.

However, this past couple of week or so has seen a dramatic downturn in form, to the point I feel like a 28 handicapper again.

In midweeks I've been playing a simulated Texas Scramble on a GC2 monitor at a local range, and I've generally played well; however, on my last session I played really poorly.

I went to the range the following evening to try and work things out, and I left feeling relatively happy with my game. I played in a proper Texas Scramble the next day and it was a disaster... duffed drives, thinned irons off tees, fatted approaches, shanks... you name a bad shot, I probably hit it that day.

I've had three nine hole games since, and each time I've felt bereft of any confidence over the ball and the bad shots continue to come. I'm carrying a slight back injury, and I'm trying to convince myself that the slump is down to me protecting the injury and compensating by not swinging as well as I can, and it is affecting my timing and motion. Its a poor excuse though, and in my mind this is more than just a bad day at the office..

I'm thinking of jacking golf for a period of time, as I may have 'golfed' myself out from regular range visits, and then coming back fresh with a lesson from my local pro first to try and pinpoint issues and then work from there.

But I though I'd ask, when you're not playing well for a prolonged period of time, how do you get back on track from a slump in form?

In my view golf's a funny game in as much it's very difficult at club level to maintain consistency.

I've been playing seriously now for 15 years or so, starting at 26 handicap and now playing off 12. During these years I cannot remember a prolonged period of really good form week after week. I do remember a month here or there playing exceptionally well , but can also recall bouts of playing exceptionally badly too.

Previously I played a lot of snooker and generally brought my standard game (such as it was) to the table most sessions. But golf's different in my view. We often comment when with our regular PP's that one day we're ready to go on the tour and very next we couldn't hit a cow's backside with a banjo!

On the course that 12 handicapper of today can sometimes play to 7 and often 28 and it frustrates the bejesus out of me.

I think you have to play through you slump and if you know what's causing it work on that or get a lesson. Otherwise I'm sure you'll go out soon and shoot the lights out and you'll be back up there again and ready for the tour!

You say your slump started a few weeks ago. Too soon to panic in my view. You'll come out the other side before you know it.

The only thing "certain" about this game is it's "uncertainty".
A terrible round can come from absolutely anywhere, as can the fantastic round.
You think you've cracked it, and it comes back to bite you in the arse.
You think about giving up, and you hit a wonder shot that convinces you that there is still a golfer in there somewhere.

Even the pros are inconsistent, they just operate at a different base level.

Last year I was playing badly culminating in an embarrassing 9&8 loss in an inter club 'Tigers' section (ie handicap 8-15) pairs match. That happened on a Wednesday night. Three days later I won the Captains Day prize and have my name up on the board in gold leaf for ever more.

It is a funny old game.

Was in great form recently and in a purple patch but thats fading and I'm struggling in patches. Some holes I play well and then chuck some horror shots in from nowhere. I'm hoping that as I play more in the better weather I can find a crumb of consistency.

Go back to basics, grip, posture, alignment, tempo

^ This.
Plus I always find that a little break from the range does me good. Just go out and play golf with a couple of mates and don't put any scoring pressure on yourself. Just hit your shot when it's your turn. Nice full turn and easy tempo.

About the same as me then, as soon as the season ended I started playing my best golf ever, typical. This period ran until about a month ago. Then the scores started to creep up. I'm just trying to work through it and see what happens, really wanted to get a lesson in but I can't see the pro until the second week in April due to both of us being unavailable at different times.

I think its a case of taking the rough with the smooth. There are always going to be days when you don't play well sometimes weeks.
The important thing is to always enjoy the game.

GASP!!!

Get it into your pre shot routine!

G- Grip
A- Aim (target)
S- Stance (distance from the ball)
P- Posture (bend from the right bit)

Thats pretty much my pre shot routine after I have lasered out my target and picked my aim spot.

After that I whack it.
