Red/Yellow markings

This is where the difference between red and yellow comes in.
In old money, red were called "lateral" ie to the side, hazards, so in your example it should be painted red, if it's yellow you can't drop sideways.

Example: 3rd at HH, it goes right across the fairway (albeit a bit diagonally) that must be yellow as you can drop back in line with the pin.
Don't know if you can remember the 1st at my place, ditch running the length of the hole down the left, that is red so if you hook into it you may take the point the ball last crossed and take a drop within 2 club lengths sideways in addition to the other options (play as it lies, go back and play again, drop back in line with the pin as far as you want).
Yeah that all makes sense. And luckily is what I've been doing anyway. ? Cheers.

Presume you're talking about the ditches, in which case I just drop before the ditch - usually in a straight line with the flag. It doesn't occur to me if it's a yellow or red ditch or that there's anything else I'd have to do.

For yellows, which you normally find when they cross the fairway, if you are using line of play you keep the point where it crossed the margin between you and the flag which is what I presume you are doing. If it is a red lateral you use the point where it crossed the margin and find nearest point of relief within 2 club lengths not closer to the hole.

Yeah that's exactly what I've been doing so we're all good here. ? Ta.

Ditch, stream, river, pond, lake, sea. All that differentiates them is the colour of the stakes
