Evening all. A group of six to eight of us are looking for a one-night, two-round getaway in April 2016 within 2 hour drive of South Yorkshire. The challenge I am having is finding a sufficiently forgiving course to accommodate the high (25+) handicappers without it losing being a bit special, possibly picturesque, for all. The entire group are 12+ so no-one particularly favours a punishing course and priority is on all enjoying the round and a getaway.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Rutland County, great course for people of all abilities. First few holes are the toughest but its always fun.

Best thing is it is right on the A1 so easy to find!

We played Moortown and Leeds golf club with Golfbreaks a bit ago and there are a few higher handicappers that go with us. Including me. Leeds golf club was very forgiving and Moortown was not that punishing, i.e. no big carries to hit the fairway or anything like that.

Have also booked Greetham Valley which is near Oakham down the A1 for next year. And I hear that is pretty good.

Also Forest Pines is a good call, great set up with 3 loops of 9, usually in good condition and some very nice scenery. Yes there are a lot of trees but again it is not silly difficult as the trees tend to stop any errant shots. And there's always a corridor;) Plus you can usually get it at a decent price.

Gainsborough Golf Club (owned by Ping) has two very contrasting loops of 18. One traditional parkland course (hilly) and one flatter (but not flat) US-style course with lots of water. Usually in great condition and not too expensive. No accommodation on site but it's a very short drive into the middle of town.

Thanks for all your recommendations.

We ended up getting a great deal at Forest Pines for later this month. Which of the three would you opt for, Forest and Pines? Beeches tends to get very mixed reviews.

Forest Pines has three loops of 9. Beeches is the weakest in my view. You may or may not get a choice in what combination you have but if you do I would choose the others. Incidentally, get used to the sound of ball on tree. It is called Forest Pines for a reason. That sound still haunts me now.......rat a tat.........rat a tat......

We played an 18-hole run of Pines and into Forest and then a 9-hole loop of Forest only on the Saturday. Beautiful.

The course was in fine fettle with only one temp (whilst a water hazard is under construction) and wonderfully active greens. It's a real thinkers course and I was pleased to get away having played to two shots over my handicap. For a first time out, that wasn't too disheartening and it is a course which, like most, benefits from local knowledge - for instance not hitting a 290 yard drive with a perfect draw to land it in a prime spot for a short approach, only to realise that the left side of the fairway is wet...and deep. :(

Within 2 hours early of SY I would have headed for Formby Hall, with one round there (and the par 3 course after) followed by another round at Formby GC or another along the NW coastline...

They have deals at Formby Hall ATM as I am trying to get the missus there so I can golf while she goes to the spa....

We have trips planned to that part of the world for next year!
