Hi all,

A pal and I have an afternoon to spare on Wednesday in Derby (before an early start on Thursday on our way up to the open, Woo hoo!!)and was wondering if any of you guys could recommend somewhere to get a round in?

There seem to be plenty of choices in the area but you can only glean so much information from the internet. Contenders so far are:

Morely Hayes
Mickleover Golf Club
Chilwell Manor
Beeston Fields

Any comments good or bad on any of the above appreciated. Also, any other recomendations in the area greatly recieved.

Also, what is everyones preferred website for golf course reviews? I used to use uk-golf but now the bleeders charge a subscription.

Thanks all,

Rob2.

I play at Ashbourne - nice course
I used to play at Kedleston - long and open

Other good ones in the area are:

Cavendish (near Buxton) excellent course
Chesterfield - top course
Horsley is meant to be excellent now.
Buxton High Peak is interesting.
Allestree & Sinfin (AKA Derby) are the municipal courses. Allestree is a real challenge but Sinfin is poor.

Don't bother with Morley - I played it last year and wasn't impressed.
Micklover is meant to be good now.
Never played Chilwell or Beeston.

Also, the Belfry is only 1/2 an hour away from Derby.

Hope you enjoy your time in Derby - let us know how it goes!!

Why not go and play Sutton Coldfield.....can only be a short hop down the A38.
Alternatively, why not splash the cash and go and play Little Aston.....you've got to at least once in your lifetime (or about 30 in my case!).
Whittington Heath, £38 (?) for 18......one of the oldest and finest (Lichfield way).

or 32 miles (40 minutes) to Beau Desert - Rugeley Road,Hazel Slade,Staffs.WS12 0PJ.

In the end we played at Chilwell Manor in Nottingham. Really enjoyed it, flat parkland course but with plenty of long par fours and some very pretty par threes to keep you focused.

Course in great nick and the locals were very friendly. Will definately be back when next working in the area.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Will trying some of the others out in the coming months.

A course around Derby worth considering is one of it public courses. Called Allestree Park. And good value
http://www.oddblob.co.uk/apgc/
or
http://www.derby.gov.uk/LeisureCulture/ParksRecreation/AllestreePark.htm

(btw. don't bother with sinfin its like a converted potato field)

Though if you get the chance Play Branston Golf & Country Club or Uttoxeter golf club that runs alongside & up the hill behind the horse race course.

If you are over Loughborough way get allong to Lingdale at woodhouse eves

All these last ones take 2-4-1's
