So the story goes that I took up Golf seriously in April, I got my first handicap (26) last month after struggling to shoot under 100.

In the past week I have worked on a few things and hit a 94 in the Rabbits cup coming in second and getting cut to 23.2. and a second round of 93 (22.8?).

I'm playing with Hippo Energy Plus that I got off ebay for £40 delivered so not great obviously, but they have done me so far.

Last week I tried a couple of balls at the range with a mates Taylormade Burner Plus, he had them fitted and he's a tall lad so they have slightly longer shafts than normal. My god could I hit a sweet ball with them. Right out of the centre every time and they must have had an extra 20 yards to my 6 Iron.

So it's my birthday soon and I have decided it might be wise to upgrade. I reckon I will have £200 tops anymore than that and I'll have to wait until christmas to use that money too.

What do you guys reckon? Is it worth paying £200 for some nearly news? If so what would you recommend or would it be better buying some low end new clubs that are fitted to me again what would you recommend?

You are moving in the right direction with what you have, so they are obviously working.
The lure of new shineys when it's all going right can sometimes be a curse, be wary.

The question has to be, what do you want from your golf? If it's to progress naturally using what you learn as you play then great, go for new clubs. If you want to improve quickly and really get the HC down then maybe invest in some lessons which will give quicker and better results than any new irons will.

Option 1 please. I have had a couple of lessons so I have covered the basics, but I do think new shinys will help me to play more.....solid.

There's no rush to get the handicap down, I'm nearly 28 so hopefully have plenty of years to get down to single figures.

My pro told me I needed to move away from my starter set to get better. Maybe ask them for advice? They might try and sell you something though :)

I could recommend a lovely set of Ping Eye 2 Irons, 3-Sw, steel shafts, golfpride multi compound grips ,great cond for age, well looked after, all yours for £ 120 posted........

Hmm yes your right there is plenty of them on ebay for £120 posted exactly as you described. Not sure they are what i'd be looking for....... or are they?

Yes.

Pings are perfect for someone relatively new to the game that wants to improve and enjoy golf.

Personally I'd say stick with what you've got. I managed to get down to 15 with my first set of adult size clubs. They were Howson Derby's and probably made your clubs look like Vega's. They were just like lumps of lead on the end of metal sticks.

Why not give yourself a handicap target, as I did, and once you get to that change your clubs. It will give you a chance to save up for some really nice new shinies and incentivise you to improve.

Otherwise, for a high handicapper those Ping Eye 2's @ £120 would be a great buy.

Would you guys reccomend buying some that I obviously haven't tested? I don't know anyone that uses them so can't try any out. I guess I could get somewhere just under £120 if I tried to resell on ebay if they don't suit.

Do you really need new clubs?

Your handicap was 26, now 23 - therefore you've improved without new clubs.

Why is your handicap high - do you get into trouble off the tee, are you a poor putter, can you chip, is your iron play any good?

re: the Pings - some people don't like them, me included, there is no denying that they make very good clubs.

It's a whole host really as I was/am new to the game. My driving is poor at times, but I believe this to be partly a result of the driver that I have been using and I will be looking to change this. Interestingly enough I played with a guy that used to use the same driver at the weekend and he experiences the same issues as I do.

The putting is starting to come together after recently purchasing a different putter. I can play a strong 5 iron and up, but I know that I play better with the Burners as mentioned in my OP. The rest of the game is coming together with practice.

At the end of the day if clubs don't help why are experienced golfers going out and buying RBZ's for £550+ per set when the set they have is fine. Why has robbest3offthetee upgraded his Irons if it will make no difference to his game?

No one is saying that they won't help in the long term. What some ARE trying to say is work out what needs fixing and go from there. Your posts contradict your ideal, you say you hit a strong 5 iron up but feel the driver is letting you down. So why keep the driver and change the irons? You also say you KNOW you play better with the Burners... over how many shots/rounds did you assess this?
Experienced golfers don't always shell out on the expensive gear, you will probably find as many (if not more) 15+ HC'ers using the latest TM or Ping offering than you will single figure players (as they have worked out that if it's working, don't change it!).

If you have already decided to get new irons, more power to you. I really hope you get something that does help you progress and not end up with the same issues caused by other parts of your game (beyond the basics).

Please lets pretend I don't have any clubs at the moment.

I really wanted somone to recommend me a set that would be ideal for me in the long term and not try to convince me that it may not be the clubs that need upgrading. (Although all advice is greatfully received).

I want to upgrade them to some that are going to be a better base to build off and continue to use for years to come. So please recommend me some clubs that are suitable for a mid-high handicapper for the budget that I set out earlier.

Ok, in that case, any of the Adams Idea A range, I used A2 irons for about 6 years bringing my HC down til I stagnated around 14 and then made the move to forged cavity/blade Mizuno irons.

I'm personally not a fan of Ping irons (many are, I know) as they are just too clunky looking and ungainly to look at (noted exception the S56 and Ansers).
Probably an idea to head to a DG or AG and try a few irons to get a feel for what works for you.

As I said above, I just hope that you make the change and don't just find the same problems. You have made it patently clear that this is not what you want to hear, BUT, the irons only make so much of a difference.

Hi mate,

there are so many different clubs /brands to choose from , I would get out to the local golf store , have your budget in mind and try a load, take your old irons, with you and compare them mate.

Don't discount one brand just because you may not of heard a lot about them . Each person will be different , one club may work for you but would not work for me as I have a cack swing.

I would also try some of the Cleveland clubs , can get some great deals on them 2nd hand at the moment , also keep a eye on the forum as some cracking deals come up on there.

Good luck and enjoy trying them out mate.

Hi, i agree with previous poster - try say a 7 iron of a few around your budget (new & used) and take it from there. I have Cleveland CG16s and love the look/feel and result.

Just got my boy wilson staff di9s and they are excellent clubs and terrific value. At the end of the day it costs nothing to try and will ultimately help you to decide to change now or leave it till later.

Cheers Midnight, how long has it taken for your handicap to come down to its current level?

Ducking ages mate, down to 19 now , but it has taken a long time, finding it very hard to get off 19 , but I will reach my goal of 18 at some time mate.
Your h/c has come down a lot quicker than mine mate, so you must be doing something right.
The way I look at it I will never be a fantastic player , but I will and do enjoy myself.
