My mate is pretty new to golf. Took it up last summer and borrowed his dads set which must be at least 30 years old, so old that the woods are actually wooden...

Anyway hes got into the game more this summer and we joined a club. Hes still using his dads old clubs and is getting frustrated that he isnt improving. He has a decent enough swing but the consistency of shot just isnt there. On a good swing he can hit the 3 iron over 250 but when he has a bad swing itll barely leave the ground. He has to have the highest shank/shot ratio in the history of the game...

I believe the clubs are a major factor in this. Ive told him that the sweet spot must be the size of a pin but hes determined to persist with them and "will get a new set when i get down to an 8 hcapp" (currently 28 but take the cap away and itd be 34/35).

Hes now considering giving in and getting a new set but is looking at things like MP68s. Im far from an expert but should he not be looking at cavity backs? ive told him to go see the pro have a few lessons and see what he recommends. I doubt itll be a set of blades??

Has anyone got any ideas for a good set to start on? or any blades that are suitable for high handicappers?

Cheers

J

A fitting session where he can try them all will probably put this to bed. Same swing different results will probably see him reaching for the GI clubs.

I think you have already given him the best advice by telling him to see a pro and ask his advice.

I dont think there is a blade that is made for high handicaps never heard of one. I know there have been a few on here that have tried blades i don't think they lasted long.

There are loads of G.I irons out there he does't even have to buy new. Again a pro will point him in the right direction.

Then again if he won't take advice let him waste his money.

over 250 yards with a 3 iron not bad for someone playing for a summer or two..

flip if i kill my 3 iron rescue club i be lucky to get 250 and i am playing 4 years..

as stated above A fitting session would be the answer after 3 balls he will know were he stands.
