Reacting to a single figure golfer

I probably prefer playing with lower handicappers than myself but generally don't mind playing with anyone; had a great round yesterday with three high handicappers (28+). If I'm honest, I was a bit frustrated at first with some of the hacking around but once I got over myself and lightened up I really enjoyed it.

What I really enjoy though, when opportunities arise, is playing with some of the low handicap guys at the club. I think it really improves your game to watch good players and stretch yourself to emulate them. Plus I really like the craic with the guys.... once they realise I can actually play a bit.

First thing I did when I took up the game was to get a regular Saturday 4 ball with 3 low handicappers.

Turned out to be the best thing I did. First few rounds were a bit daunting but after that it was like getting free lessons every weekend.

Never put them off there game and my opinion would be if they huffed about a high handicapper not being of there standard then they need to remember they were in that position thereself at one point.

Assuming a low handicapper is a good teacher is rather dangerous just like assuming a high handicapper doesn't know what he's talking about

Just telling it like it is Mike...:ears:

In fact only twice last year I think - at the Hanbury Manor Centenary bash and the Powerplay at the Grove....

And you played rubbish both times :-)

This post was made for me

Imurg (little Fat Bro is 20 months younger than me and plays off 5
Im older Slimmer (just) but play off 23

Im amazed at how he can recover from a bad shot, no really im in awe of the little bastid, coz its something I just cant do...well i can just sometimes

I play with him and CVG (hcp14 ish) most weeks, I think it has the effect of saying to me, "If they can do it, why cant I" , So I go for the shots that they do and then screw it up.

last week I played against Alex1975, just 9 holes, he plays off 20 so not much in it... played bogey golf, 17 points for 9 holes, no risks, no silly shots, left loads out there, but still beat him by a few

So On Friday, Im going to resolve not to hit the ball too hard, think about every shot, not let myself get intimidated by my SFG bro
and im going to wupp his ass big time

At least its got to happen a couple of times this year

Fragger

Didn't happen last week though did it...?

With Fragger I can tell that sometimes he sees me escape with an "adventurous" par and tries to replicate it next time he's in dire straits. Not knocking him at all but he hasn't the skill to do it and would be better off chipping back to the safety of the fairway or 1st cut and taking the medecine. That's how 8's and 9's get racked up.

Part of the "knowledge" of being a lowish handicap is knowing when you can go for it and get away with it and when you have to bite the bullet.
More often than not I can get myself out of sticky situations and recover a par or bogey at worst, Fragger, on the other hand, when he gets in trouble he mostly posts a big score instead of taking the punishment and saving bogey or double at worst.

This Friday I sliced a drive on a par 5 into the rough behind a tree. I was able to hack out to just past the tree and then put the ball on the green for an easy 2 putt. Having the confidence and ability to hit the green from 180 yards meant I didn't have to try a recovery shot that Seve would have laughed at the thought of.

The person who I play with the most is currently off of 2.3, the same age as me and who I went to college with. I don't know if this helps but I enjoy playing with him as much he does with me. I have learnt a lot from him and he given me some coaching points and got me shooting in the 90's to the 80's.

However some of the member around my age (20) can be full of it and boast about how well they are playing or whatever. I quite like it when they cock up so I can chirp in with a "not a good chip there mate"

Three of the nicest guys I have ever played golf with are JustOne, Snelly and Pieman. Three of the lowest handicapped golfers on the forum. Have only played with Snelly the once, but have "crossed swords" with James and Paul on numerous occasions and each time the banter has been brilliant and I love watching the way they can hit the ball. The nice thing is that both of them are easily capable of putting the odd one in the trees (remember the 3rd at Copthorne Paul) which always makes me feel better about my game.

My best ever score came when playing with a 10, 6 and a 3 capper to my 28. Was a society day including the MD of our company and to be honest I was crapping myself. By watching what they did and by listening to them I was able to knock my best ever score of 92.

In the same society there was a couple of guys who played close to scratch but by god they were boring to play with.

IMO doesn't matter what the handicap if they're a miserable git then that sticks. Depends wholly on the personality. Couldn't care less what they play off.

Like most on here my experiences of playing with single figure handicappers has been positive with two exceptions. Once playing a pro am the pro was a pain in the arse. Clearly needing the money of the prize fund there was no joy once i started playing bad shots and he felt I was his handicap. Secondly the occassional guy who is hanging on to a single figure but whose game has long deserted him. Rather than go with the flow he severely beats himself up on a weekly basis, which becomes less amusing with time! Otherwise though it is revaeling and wholly positive.
