In a vain attempt to rediscover some thread of Driving ability a took out a Callaway Hyper X driver that's been lurking in the cupboard to see if it made a difference.
Alas no. But after a dozen or so drives a rattling noise could be heard from the head. I assume this is excess weld material that has come loose.
Is it an easy fix for a pro? Will they just pull the shaft, clean it out and stick it back in?

Sounds like a loose swing weight. I guess they'll take the grip end off and see what comes out before deciding what to do. If it's a swing weight I'm guessing it'll be a reshaft job.

Is this likely to be costly? Is it worth doing? Probably going to sell the thing anyway...

Ian....what planet are you on? if it's broken, phone Callaway and sort it out. From where you are, you could probably drive to Chessington and swap it for something not broken.
Why lark around with Pro shops and paying for stuff....Callaway will see you right (unless it's nicked!!)

Seriously, phone and get the S.P.

With your brains and communication skills, I reckon you can swing a new driver from Callaway. I managed it and didn't even have a convincing story up my sleeve!!!

They are (were) about the best for this, but I am going back some years.

Tell them their reputation on the GOLF MONTHLY FORUM rests on a "satisfactory outcome".

It's a hyperX.....shouldn't be broken so soon. :)

Hi there,

I had the same problem last year.

When I started back playing I bought a secondhand Callaway Driver (cant remember the exact type)from NB's, and a few weeks later while at the local Driving Range I heard a rattle coming from the club. On speaking to the staff they told me that they could not repair it, and it would have to be returned to Callaway, and it would take two weeks to return it.

Having waited the two weeks I contacted the Driving Range to be told it was STILL with them. I then contacted Callaway Custoner Care and they coulndn't have been more helpful. They uplifted the club within 24 hrs and said it would be returned in 2 to 3 days.

I received a phone call from them the next day to say that they could not repair it,and they didnt have any of the same type available.

So they sent me a 'Brand New' FT9 Driver

So my advise would be, depending how old the club is, contact Customer Care and see what they have to say, providing you can afford to be without your club for a few days, it might be to your advantage.

I had a rattling driver once, took it to our pro who diagnosed (correctly) a blob of glue that had come loose inside and was rattling around inside the shaft. He removed the grip, shook the club upside down and out it fell. One new grip later and all was fine.
The driver I am currently using has the same problem. Turn it upside down and you can hear the glue "blob" making it's way down the shaft. I can't be bothered to sort it at the moment as it's not too off putting.

I once had the same problem but my local pro put the driver head into a bucket of hot water and after about 5 mins removed it and put it in a bucket of cold water. This cured the rattle as the excess glue must have reattached itself. :)
