Ok here's teh choice. The light is fading you have two options:

1. Go to the range and have a leisurely hour and a half hitting balls working on routine

2. Go to the course and rush around six holes. No warm up, just straight there, straight on and finish in the fading light

Reason I ask is that until recently I would have gone to the range every time, today I went to the course, made a hash of the first four holes, played some good short game shots to scramble a half decent score and then bagged a five pointer on our 5th. From now on its course every time for me.

Can't I have both?

I would either get there earlier, or if not possible, mix it up.

Depending on what I am working on, and what stage I am at of working on it, I would sometimes choose one option and sometimes the other.

Course everytime. I've fallen out with the range as it seems like a different game most of the time. For some reason, things that work on the range don't work on the course and vice versa. Anyway, i can get round at least the first 10 holes at my track in 1 & 1/2 hours.

Ok the reason you only have six holes is because of the light. The light doesn't affect you on the range so you can have longer there. In fact you can have two hours if you want. And no either or nonsense getting splinters on the fence. Choose whichever you would choose the majority of the time! :D

Range for me. Can't see what you'd get out fo trying to rush round. Personally if I was rushing to the first tee and hadn't warmed up the tempo would be rubbish and I'd need the first couple of holes to get into it which sort of defeats the object. Why just play the remaining four holes..

The OP said he made a hash of the first four holes and whilst I can see the benefit of some short game practice in real time conditions I'd rather spend the same amount of time working in a relaxed way at the range.

Would choose the course, and when I was playing my best golf a few years back I was playing 6 holes in the evening far more often than I was at the range. Nothing like playing for real to really sharpen up your game.

As the range is less than 100 yards away and the course (which is still closed) is 30 minutes drive away then it has to be the range. :)

go to the course but if its not crowded play 3/4 holes not 6
One drive/long iron from the tee and then lots of shots from 100 yds in, dont worry about scoring, just sharpen up your short game ;)

Now that I hadn't thought of. Inspired! :D
I usually spend 2 spring/autumn evenings a week like this. well worth the effort in the long run. :D ;)
