I had a lesson today and told my pro that I was doing ok in range but shocking when it came to the course. Best bit of advise was get out and play on the course more (understandable) and the other after changing some bits to my swing was a range game. Where I practice at Wycombe Heights the range is slanted from right to left anyway but has lots of markers out on the range, here is the idea:

Play a course on the range! Pick up your local card for yardages and using range markers create a fairway so for me nice and wide between the two 200's.

Say a hole is 400 yards, and you hit a drive 200 yards within the fairway and the next shot is 150 yards your obviously left with 50 yards to play with. Pick the 50 yard marker and go for it then honestly judge what you think you could sink your puts in from the distance you hit.

If your chipping distance away from your target then for me I have to chop it into the bucket if it goes in thats in the hole, next to it one putt further away two putts etc etc.

When you create a fairway with the markers if you miss it then take 20 yards off your shot.

We did a few holes to give me an idea and I have to say the mentality on the range changes, picking and using different clubs and re-adjusting your swing. I think it might help me personally when I have a range session. Any other games like this out there to make range sessions a bit more interesting?

Hit as many drives over the fence at the end of the range as you can in 5 minutes ;)

Happy Gilmore is also a personal favourite. People around you always appreciate it, especially if you're wearing jeans and swearing a lot. ;)

My local range can be very quiet at times and as there is only one target green I tend to go from bay to bay hitting at the target. Other wise I feel I stand in one spot and don't really think about alignment and aiming as much as I should as the bay and mat do it for me.

Not the ones in the basket - the other balls, well thats a different matter all together

Go with a mate and have nearest the pin most drives between the 200 yard markers pitch it in the basket for a few quid to keep the mind on the pratice. It is pointless going to the range without something to work on really as all you do in ingrain the faults you already have most people would be as well off not bothering.

This is exactly what I do unless I wanted to work on something specific. But I'll usually finish off playing a 'fake round' at my course.

I think it's much better practice for on your course play. Swapping between different clubs each shot rather than hit 20 7i's then 20 drivers etc.

I've actually changed the way I play some of the holes based on what I've learned doing this.

When he explained it to me it sounded quite cool, gives a purpose for shots on the range, ie different clubs and yardages etc. Where do you play westy? I play at chesfield downs with my old man sometimes as he is up that way.

I sometimes do this sort of thing (like playing my course, club for club) but I don't bother wasting balls on 40 yard pitches or virtual chip n runs.
I save pitching for the pitching area where I can see a proper flag and green-shaped area.
It's a good idea though... :)

I have been known to play all the par 4s "in my head"...and then hit the shots I would be hitting.
e.g. 2nd hole, short par 4 = 3 wood + PW or 5 wood + 8/9 iron. Most folks do this (I guess) but I add the challenge of not going left (at all) on the second shot.....better to slice it 10 yards than pull it left OOB.

i go to the range with a mate and we hit 5 balls(range balls)each so take it in turns and after about 30 -40 balls then we pick a shoot say 2nd on the 1st would be a 9 iron then we both hit 5 each with a 9 iron and both say if on the green or not

I used to at the old range. But at Chesfield I don't think I've ever seen the collector out.

My m8 was telling me at the weekend one of the ranges he used to go to had a big gong at 200 yards. That sounds like great fun trying to nail it. :D

i shy away from the ramge because I find it tedious, but I think I will adopt some of these games. I used to do this kind of stuff when I used to go. I prefere to go with some one and challenge them and chat inbetween shots etc.

We have a trampoline at 150. It's immensely fun!! x

It must just be me then but I find these "virtual course" things boring. There is no comparison to playing the course and I end up just hitting a 3 wood or 7 iron for the heck of it. I'd much rather hit 10 7 irons and try and get all of them inside say a twenty yard radius or drill ten drives between the two markers. I find that much more helpful for focussing my mind
