Professionals say outside of bunkers
My club is in the middle of the bunker
Played today and they were in the bunker but right at the edge

Where should they be left ?

Welcome

Have a search of the forum (top right) and enjoy reading the many various older threads discussing this subject
If everyone did that, then there would never be a new thread ever again.

Every golfing topic under the sun has already had multiple threads, from socks to the cost of tee pegs. All we need now is a thread about WHS, and, we'll have covered everything;)

I don't mind a bit of revisionism, it gives people a second go at being right.

Wherever they were before I used it. I figure different clubs and maintenance crews have various preferences.
I tend to follow this method as well. This thread will confirm that there is no hard and fast rule, different clubs have different answers to this question.

My own club has them head in the bunker, handle on the edge. I like this way, not a fan of rake in the middle of the bunker.

We actually mentioned this very recently in a different thread - different clubs have different requests about where to leave it. My club asks that you leave it head-in with the handle resting up on the edge of the bunker - less surface area on the ground for the ball to hit I guess. That would also be my preference and what I tend to do anyway.

Some clubs ask that you put them in the middle of the bunker. Just seems like more footsteps to rake to go in and get it. Plus for a large bunker you'd have to toss it in there from a few yards away so as not to make footsteps you can't rake on the way out. I wonder if rakes ever get broken that way?

A great suggestion to kill off a forum.

Thanks.

Maybe I could've worded it differently. I intended to give the OP a head-start on the inevitable 200 posts to follow on, as to the range of views previously expressed on this topic

I don't mind revisiting topics either

But shouldn’t there be a rule for all?

If the RandA and PGA both say rakes should be left out of bunkers, surely that should be the rule for all.

I played Royal Melbourne yesterday and they leave them on the edge f every bunker. Not in them.

But my club they are left in the middle which annoys me because the balls usually end up against the rake

Played a course down in cornwall recently that had rake holders placed outside the bunkers. Picture the tines on the ground and the handle held up by a stick with a v-notch on top. Seemed an elegant solution

As I have said before, where they are left is of no concern to me, I would just like the other half of the membership to actually use them.

I guess I don't think it is that important. Consistency would be better, one rule would be clear, but rake placement is a suggestion rather than a rule.

It's a good chat topic with no ultimate right answer.

I see 3 possibilities
All in the bunker
Half in, half out
All out.

All in involves more footsteps to rake while picking up the rake, possible accusations of testing the sand before playing your shot and if wet, sand all over the handle. Time wasted.
All out can deflect a ball into/out of the bunker, and after rain, wet, muddy hands.
Half in half out seems best to me....no footprints to rake, clean handle and if 6 feet long, a ball wont be stopped near the edge/lip

Not sure how you can have a rule for all when each course and bunker is different-

Some courses like the bunker in the middle , some all the way out , some on the edge and some provide a stand

There are course with pot bunkers where it’s a struggle where a rake can fit in

There is no right answer just what’s right for each specific course

Outside 100%. I've no idea why so many clubs insist on specific placing. Bunkers are tough enough without leaving an extra large obstruction in them.
But what if you leave them outside, then a ball that would have travelled harmlessly past the bunker hits the rake and ends up in it? That would be infuriating.

It's not really an obstruction in the bunker since you just move it.

That's some serious what iffery going on there. The general reason given for not outside is it may in fact deflect it away from the bunker. Yes you can move the rake but having a ball stopped at the edge as opposed to rolling to the middle of the bunker is infuriating.
