Even though I work for train operating company, i will still have to turn in for my shift, watch the tv or a dvd, surf the net, then again just a normal day at the station.

Gonna be a nightmare, get the train to work in the mornin but should be able to avoid the evening one, that said I bet hardly anyone turns up to work between each day strikes.

It wouldn't be so bad but 1100 out of the 1500 redundancies are taking VR any bloody way.

Was thinking of takin the week off, just can't face a long day at work with the extra stress of 6 hour commute round trip times for a week, takes me 3hr round trip to get 7 bloody miles in this day and age as standard..

Sack the buggers.

Complete pain in the rear end. I go into London every day and the M1 will be a complete nightmare if I have to try and get in by car. I have somewhere to park but the journey I don't want to think about.

I have been tupe'd recently to a firm that has no respect for any of it's workforce, they are trying to force people to leave by any means they legally can. I hate work for the first time in 30 years. I for one understand their plight and I'm sorry for anyone who needs the train to get to anywhere but I support them.

guys i am one of the employees taking strike action, and honestly it is completely justified.Network rail are trying to completely change our terms and conditions, give us less pay, and makeit compulsory to work 3 sat night shifts in 4 every month!
They have dragging their heels for 4 years on harmonisation of terms and conditions of all the private companies that came under their umbrella when NR was created.
In scotland we are paid up to 25% less than our fellow worker in england doing the SAME work! is this fair???
So it is not as if this is a sudden strike, its been building and building for years, and as the fat cats seem like they will not budge, this is the only course of action we the workers have left!
I understand its a pain for you all, but we have to hit them where it hurts.....i ask you, who here would be happy with HAVING to work 3 sat night shifts in a 4 wk cycle, plus having your wages reduced, and all new term and conditions....espescially as harmonisation was promised 4 yrs ago....
1 more thing.the guys at the top of the tree are all gettin between 300k and 500k bonus' every yr, we are lucky to get a few hundred....do you feel their pain!?

Hi Big Biffa, I think if we reread your post in 4 years time we will all smile a little.
Who would want to work 3 Saturday night shifts in 4? I feel you will have people desperate for this work shortly.
An advertised position last year had 3 replies, same advert this year 120!!!
Taking home a wage will be the most important thing in the next few years. Reduction in staff, in pension benefits, flexibility of working time will all be the norm until we get through this recession, you either accept it or join the job centre.
Now what relevance has a bosses pay got to safety?
Lastly, the Union, timing is everything, Mr Brown has no chance of getting in now, obviously the rail workers are more right wing than I thought. Perhaps they feel that they will get an easier time from the new occupier at No 10.
Don't think the strike will be welcommed by the Easter travellers going home to see their loved ones.

i agree jobs are important, yes, but you find it acceptable to cut wages while cost of living continues to climb(fuel prices anyone?).The relevance of the bosses bonus is this: i can guarantee you, that when our salarys go down, the boss mens wont!
Safety: they are trying to get rid of 1500 staff, yet every area in scotland are already 20-30% short of staffing levels!
In short less men means less work(maintenance) on the track, which in turn means less safe railways, which then leads to potters bar/ hatfield etc! These horrifc accidents occured because of the privateers were not accountable!
listen, apologies to all the public, but we did not WANT to strike, we have been left with no choice due to 4 yrs of getting nowhere!

We are all going to have to accept cuts in income - mine is down 60%!!-whilst the cost of living rises.

Your bosses incomes are of no relevence, they are paid to do the job they do, end of!

I remember when the placamatic(spl?)came in, reducing the PW workers numbers and no doubt there will other automated systems by now but I don't remember any safety problems.

You did not disagree with the help to David, after all it is four years and guess what, you chose a specific date to strike, amazing!

Never mind, we will still be able to swing the clubs come what may, God willing.

Have a good weekend.

Load of bollocks mate..

400 jobs to go over how many thousand??? 1100 taking VR.

Moaning that English workers get paid more is sad, compare public spending its nearly double are the UK tax payers cost.

Do you really think the public are going to be held to ransom over your greedy demands??? I say sack the buggers and bring in people who will work the job. We all have been affected by this mess, I for one lost my job, why should my new job be disrupted because of greedy train/bus/whatever workers not pulling their weight?

whatever m8, your entited to your opinion, but hey lazy.....no way! ive worked for the company(in its various guises since 1992) working 12 hr nighshifts, repairing track, while you were tucked up in bed! its not about the money, the main issue is safety!
How can 10 men maintain a piece of track as well as 20? and that is what the tracks are facing, poor maintenance leads to poor track, which WILL cause accidents.
Yes we may have to accept less wages, but why should we have to do 2 or 3 times as much work?
I understand the biterness, because of the inconvenience to you all, and hey, im sorry for that. But no way am i gonna apologise for wanting better conditions at work!
And lastly, we are fully aware there are eastern europeans who are ready to pop in and do our work(its already happening), but doesnt this go for all our jobs? thats whats wrong with our country(or the eu), just let any tom dick n pavel(lol) in to take over our place......rant rave etc!
Anyway guys, i wasnt looking to fall out with anyone on the forum(life too short),i just wanted to to know the reasons why this is happening.
Im pretty sure that network rail will take action to prevent it happening anyway, but if not...sorry! :)
