Radio 2 - 30 minute auction

I think as soon as you move into the realm of raffles and lowest bid auctions, you have to follow stricter regulations and licensing, which might explain why this format is preferred.

Although many people will be frustrated at the disparity between the Rich and the playing class, it is worth remembering that it was a 'on the spot' gesture by Lee Westwood and responded to by the BBC for Children in Need. I doubt anyone considered the political ramifications of such a gesture or indeed any 'fairer' way to deal with it.

It is times like this I wish I was a rich bastard though.....

Great prize for whoever wins the auction, good to luck to them.

One of the prizes they have on offer (can't remember the details but it involves going to some celeb party, the Goodwood festival of speed and something else) can be won by texting in on a raffle basis, so there is something for everyone, even the glass half empty it's not fair, whinge whine moan brigade

I wonder how much is the Ginger tw!t is putting in himself to play with the No1 Golfer in the World??
The "Ginger tw!t" puts more in to C.I.N than anyone else I can think of. His Drivetime Dine and Disco raise almost £500,000 last year, I think he deserves a break don't you?

Just Google Chris Evans Children in Need 2010 and see what he has already done and going to do.

As much as I'd love to be in a position to win something like this, I can't find anything to complain about.

Don't forget also that although Chris Evans will be as excited as any of us would be to play, he is also giving his time up for free, and I'd bet a fair amount that his time is worth more than Lee Westwoods.

He will also be doing a lot more than this round of golf.

I guess these guys will never win! They sit back and they're accused of not doing enough for charity. They organise something like this and they get slagged off.

Good luck to them and whoever wins the auction.

I just wish I had the money to put forward a decent bid.......

I was trying to work out if we could raise enough between us to make a bid, then have a draw to see who got to play. I think we'd still be be a few £K short

The point us "slaggers" are making is that it's great that so much money will be raised for a worthy charity. We're not - at least I'm not - slagging off Evans or R2. It's just annoying that, as an ordinary guy, I have precisely zero chance of having the top bid. It will go to some rich businessman who'll think nothing of bidding 100k to play with Chris and Lee. If they had made it a draw instead of an auction then anyone would be in with a chance and they could even make more money. Let's say 100k wins it. If enough people entered a draw, say a pound a go and as many entries as you like, then well over 100k could be raised and anyone who entered would have a chance.
I never like these auctions as its only a very small minority who are left standing at the end.

Same old isn't it. Something real golfers can only dream about and will probably go to some 6 rounds a year merchant

Who cares... it's all about making money for a great cause. I'd rather that someone who's never played donated £50k to CiN rather than it going to a golf mentalist for 50p.

Why will it go to a part time golfer ? Can't you be a "real" golfer if you're rich ? Most of the wealthy people I know play much more golf than me because their success has given them more free time and options

That is my point. Most of us will unable to compete and it'll go to some business type who may (or may not) only play corporate golf where the quality of play isn't always the most important thing.

I'm with Imurg on this. I think had this been some sort of draw then 100,000 people would have entered anyway and if it had been done via a paypal internet account or text message then that some would have been raised and at least everyone would have had an equal chance. What's the phrase.... Money talks!

and equally it could go to somebody who's never picked a club up, spend a quid on a text to enter and hacked his way around screwing the event up for everyone. In the time available for the auction, who's to say they'd have got 100,000 raffle entries ? They might have got 10,000. They should do whatever raises the most money, it's Children in Need not Whinging Golfer in Need.

I love the idea of a raffle for the "man-in-the-street" golfer but the whole set up would have to be very different to the usual C.I.N. auction which is designed to give an instant result that morning.
And I don't think you'd get enough people text/phone bidding during the short period that these things run for.
We as golf nuts might make the time to phone in during the morning of the auction, but to get even 10,000 people at £5 a time to equal a winning bid of £50K, it would need to run for many days.

I'm not sure I'd want it anyway, Lee said that he'd like to get it played before Christmas and it might be cold or wet then.....

Don't see the problem with it going to someone with money. Main point is that it's a quick and simple way to raise maybe £100K for a great cause.

It's a harsh fact of life that we will never get chance to win these auctions, but it's not worth getting bitter about it.

Does it really matter if the guy who "wins" it plays off +1 or doesn't have a handicap certificate?
The fact is that it will raise an awful lot of money for CIN.
The whole reason it has been offered in the first place.
I bet the kids that benefit from the money couldn't give a toss what handicap the guy has.
:D :D :D :D :D :D
