I was driving back from Aberdeen theis afternoon and Queens 'Don't Stop Me Now' came on and I cranked up the volume and bopped for the next 3 minutes and straight after it the DJ payed The Beatles and ...

I switched it off and put on a CD.

So who would you say had the biggest musical impact in your life.

Tough shout. I grew up with my parents playing the Beatles, so it's kind of a sound track to my early years, But I saw Queen on the Live Killers tour in the ealy 80's and it was awesome. I plumped for the beatles as i probably know more of their songs word for word by osmosis!

Has to be the Beatles gents, sorry but just no comparison.

Lennon and McCartney were probably the 2 best lyricists in popular music ever!!
Their musical style fashioned that of both theirs and future generations.....Hey Jude, Let It Be, A Day in the Life, Eleanor Rigby...need I say more?

Don't get me wrong, Queen were a fantastic band and more of my generation but can you really take Brian May's hair seriously??

I think McCartney is the luckiest guy ever to walk the earth thanks to Lennon. What has he done in the ast 30 years ??? The Frog Chorus?

Lennons coat tails had McCartneys fingerprints all over them.

Have to agree with the above. (Thor's post)

The Beatles started it all back in the sixties and have influenced so many bands, "Oasis" to name just one. Hey Jude and Let It Be are possibly two of the greatest songs ever written and performed.

It's also worth remembering that all four Beatles succeeded in their own solo careers - especially John Lennon and Paul Macartney.

You're looking at it all wrong.

Queen were at the top for 10 years
Lennon wrote some great stuff for 15 years
McCartney wrote some stunning stuff for 20 years. Then he fell apart and has written nothing of quality since.

But look at what the Stones have written in the last 20 years. Not a lot. Doesn't mean that their good stuff isn't brilliant.

Other writers with longevity :

Weller : had 10 great years and 20 years with the odd good/acceptable track
Bowie : had 6 or 7 unbelievable years, then nothing, then 2 years, then nothing, then another couple of great years.

Like Golfmmad says, including Wings stuff, Maccer has probably written more great tracks than anyone.

Back to Beatles vs Queen.

A Queen track sounds like a Queen track. Good, but limited.

The Beatles had so many different sounds over the years, from Rock'n'Roll, thru' R'n'B to ballads, to Phsycedelic, etc etc.

You might not like every Beatles track out there, but there's 10 times the quality tracks that Freddie ever wrote.

:p
