I was out last week and made some terrible 3 putts, one of my playing partners said my problem was that I was bending over the ball to get my head in line with that ball and this is not how one should put,he then said I should stand almost upright when setting up to putt. Our other playing partner nodded and agreed..... now maybe its just me but I was always sure that you were to get your eye over the ball when making a put..... are my playing partners right...... have I been doing it wrong since I took up golf at the start of the year....... were all "new" to golf but can anyone help me before I start a bad habit??

Funnily enough, this very same problem was pointed out to me. I was told that I hunched over the ball. I've since straightened up, stood taller and my putting is much better.

Give it a try....

im also quite new to golf but was always told to stand over the ball when putting with your eyes directly above the ball. This is why some new putters have a line on the head of the putter to look down on.
dont stop what you are doing. not all advise is good advise.

But, being too hunched over the ball restricts the movement of your arms.

I would say I'm bent over at about 45° from my waist, too much? too little??

had a bit of a putting lesson last week and my pro said he doesnt care how I hold it or what stance I use. Its all about the face being square at impact.

what with belly putters, broom handles and that tiny thing Garrigus uses there is no right or wrong way, its what works for you

yeah i agree but i meant to stand over the ball but not haunched over. you bend your upper body over the ball and should be looking straight down over your putter.
im no expert but this is what i have always been taught and in the magazine a new putter was advertised with a line you should be looking over

Watch some footage of Jack Nicklaus putting and tell me if "hunching" is bad!?

As long as it works it's fine, and that may be different for each of us

The best putter in our club stands like Quasimodo with a vegetable up his.....

If you ask me, putting is not a very dynamic physical challenge. With a smooth stroke, a good feel for distance and control over the face, you too can play off scratch.

Is the right answer. I've tried putting 'text book' style and now use my own 'would give Bobmac nightmares' method, guess which one I putt better with?
