nowerdays you see a lot of plastic insert paced putters, i have yet to use one. i have an old ping anser putter, with solid metal face. what would be the main difference/benefit of either club head?

I borrowed a friend's vintage anser about 6 months ago when I had mislaid my G5 putter (with the blue insert). It scared the life out of me, the ball came of the face with the loudest, well, 'ping', and I degreened my first two putts. If one can have a frightening experience with a putter, this was it.

In reverse, I would guess that the feel off an insert putter would be incredibly soft and I wouldn't be surprised if you left a fair few very short. I do love my 2 ball from inside 6 feet but find that 25 feet downhill is no fun at all.

I started with a standard blade putter. Come the time to upgrade I tried several and opted for a Taylor Made Agsi centre shafted mallet style as it felt right for me.
Used it for some time with mixed results (still learning)
Always loved the look of the Odyssey 2 ball. Made the mistake of not really trying it out and just bought one.

It's a beautiful looking tool but I struggled with it from day 1. Left loads of putts well short. The insert seemed to make the ball just bounce off the face.
Didn't take long for it to be consigned to the garage to be replaced with the original Taylor Made (still using it)

Soft inserts don't do it for me.

Inserts don't do it for me at all, but it is a very personal preference. I found with any of the putters with inserts that the feel wasn't very good and I could never get the ball to the hole. I use a Cameron fastback now and for me it is the best I think.

To be truthfull, the TM Rossa agsi putters do have inserts. Unlike many other manufacturers their inserts are metallic, similar to aluminium (not sure what it is to be honest!) Supposedly promotes a smoother roll and less bounce off the face (hype possibly?)
Dunno, but I love mine.

I agree. There's mine just there on the right. :D

I've gone back to my old Ping Anser this year and to be honest on the slowish greens I play onit is ideal. However get me on slippery surface like Blackmoor or the Grove and the ball just comes off too hot so I've switching to my odyssey white ice #9 as the face is softer. I've been looking at the TM Ghost Maranello or the new Ping range especially as they've now launched a range specifically for those like me that go back a little on the inside. Some have inserts but many are milled or solid faces and so I'm in a dilema as to whether I'd have the same problem again on quicker surfaces. Whilst they may suit the stroke better will the ball still come off too fast

I finally switched this year, from my Ping My Day, a very classic looking typical Ping heel and toe.

I tried a lot of insert putters and thought the feel was too soft. But the TaylorMade Corza Ghost has a much firmer, clickier feel that I liked. Anything in that range could be a good option to make the transition to an insert putter.

my day was my first ping putter (subsequently got nicked by a so called friend because i putted so well with it & it p'd him off)

my friend has 2 new (probably 20 putts hit)ping putters with inserts in his shed doesnt use them doesent like the feel & cant get used to it ,uses an old thing looks like a bronty rustler mkII
