Putter Test Opportunity

You could offer to fly me first class, put me up in a 5 star hotel and then get a limo to the testing centre to take my pick of putters and I would still say no.

The frog is here to stay.

They're not.

I was at the Ping putter fitting a fortnight ago which was at the Forest of Arden. Still a fair drive for me but worth it.

When GM are running a "we'll come and fit you for clubs in you're back garden" opportunity I'm sure you'll be top of the list......

I think its a valid question, no need for the sarcasm. The opportunities afforded by GM are superb. I had a wonderful day at Walton Heath. Maybe a Wilson Staff opportunity in Irvine Ayrshire would be ideal for Doon.

I thought Wilson left Irvine years ago.
Can't stand their clubs after about 1970 anyway.
Mind you I did have a Billy Casper putter for 30 years.

thanks for the confirmation Mike - not a surprise and entirely understandable for such a wide ranging review.

Yes, as a lefty I understand as well, I just didn't want to write a mock review if there was no chance of being chosen.

In the future it might be worth stating that lefties should not enter certain opportunities if it the clubs are just for right handers, just so we don't get our hopes up only to be dashed on the rocks of disappointment . Then again you may well get some fundamentalist lefty organisation taking you to court for alleged Sinistrophobia. Alternatively I suppose I could pretend to be right handed for the day and just say I am really really crap. Then flog any free gear you get on ebay. ;)

That was a pleasant day in the sun with the GM team and Matt from here (cant remember his full forum name at the mo).

The 15 suppliers were each there for half a day and the 7 testers went round four in each session.

After a "fitting" which ranged from "how do you feel with that one?" from some to measuring and attaching an iphone to the putter with one brand we had a putt from various distances and chatted with the rep. Following this we then had five attempts at a very testing 25' (??) right to left breaking putt to see how many we could inside 2' and then five attempts at a pretty much straight 5 footer.

I wont bore you with the details of each brand but what definitely emerged was that I am much more suited to a mallet type putter than the current Anser style I use. In general (and following a couple of alignment and backswing tips - thanks Scott from Benross) they were much more successful; particularly on short to medium range putts.

Initially it is obviously very different looking down on these putters (particularly two of my three favourites from Ping and TM which looked huge at first) but after just a handful of putts, especially if they are dropping, you soon get used to it.

We finished at about 3.30 and headed out onto the course with Neil and Jez but it was getting a bit slow after 9 and they both headed off whilst Matt and i decided to hang around there rather than on the M25! The course was in very good condition and pretty with flowers and lots of trees but not sure that the standard rate green fees could be justified.

All in all a good day out; although regretting wearing shorts with a very red raw section between my knee and ankle:D

Sounds like a great day wookie. If it wasn't for work commitments would have loved to put my name forward for this. Are you allowed to say anything more or is that top secret till the magazine comes out? Really interested to hear more about the new Nome and if you decided to change putters now?

Nothing was said so assume its ok Tiger - I tried the Nome out and really liked it but not quite as much the Senita. They didn't have the Nome in the arc/ shaft type that had been recommended for me which was a shame as it would have been good to compare the two side by side. They have the same insert so both felt the same off the face with the Nome feeling slightly heavier I think.

The other one which was very interesting was the TM Daddy Long Legs which even compared to the other larger type heads seemed a bit of a monstrosity to start with but putted very well. The grip is very long and heavy and ideally you hold it a bit further down the grip which apparently helps the pendulum motion out. Unfortunately they only had the other model of head with a 38" shaft so I couldn't fully test the Daddy Longlegs but even with the shorter shaft it was good for me.

I think a putter change could be happening soon:D probably one of the above.

We got a few golf balls Gordon and the round was free of charge.
