I think it is quite safe for a putter to be shortened without detriment to its characteristics- I know an 11 year old who plays with a tiny Ping CRAZ-E putter probably around 25 inches and this has been cut down from 35 inches. He putts a dam sight better than I do! That said I always liked 35 inches until using a 34 for the first time, it just feels more balanced through the stroke. I did then try a 33 inch to see if this was better still but it wasn't so standing at 6ft 2" I am a 34 inch man.
