I 'wasted' some time at the range and AG yesterday, and played around with some putters. I tried the Itsy, Sabretooth and a Bettinardi blade. My current prodder is a 35" White hot no.7.

Anyway, after the usual impromtu lesson from the guys there, I came to the conclusion that I can play with a blade style putter, but what reall made all the difference with my stroke was the length of the shaft. I cannot putt with any consistency with a 35", but could, regardless of putter type, with a 34" shaft.

Question.

Should I have my current putter cut down, and if so how is this done, does it effect the weighting in any way etc. Or, should I just ask for a new 34" putter for my 40th later this month? Then I'd have a blade and the weird looking No7.

Easily get it cut down by your local Pro.

I got the Sabertooth from Santa and I instantly had an inch chopped off by my Pro and a thicker grip put on it.

It just felt better when I was gripping down the shaft and low and behold I find it better now.

Dont think it will effect the swing weight of the putter very much. Even if it has I still putt well with it.

Never thought about this too much before, but now I am, I'm realising that when I'm gripping my putter I'm at the bottom of the grip and possibly a fraction on the shaft.
Do you think this affects the way the putter works and is it worthgetting it cut down?

It gives you greater control over the putter when you grip down the shaft, Barry Lane uses something like a 32" putter.

Speak to your local Pro/club fitter and seek their opinion/advice.

Ademac. If your comfortable holding the putter way down the shaft, then obsolutely get an inch or 2 cut off. Your local pro would do it for you for no more than a couple of quid and take about 10 mins. If after trying it you dont like it, take it back and he will lengthen it again for about £5.
How much does a new Scotty cameron cost?
I am 5'9 and my putter is 32 in long.
In all the years I have adjusted putters, I have NEVER lengthened one !!!
Go on, be a devil. Give it a go :)

I'm 6' 2" and bought a new Ping Craz-E pautter last year replacing my 15 year old Ping Anser. The new putter has A 32" shaft and I still find myself gripping the shaft lower than the rubber grip. It doesn't feel right if I'm not touching the steel.

Always better touching steel while putting than touching cloth!!!!!

I'll be giving my pro a call in a bit then and get it sorted. I,m 5'9 also but not sure the lenght of the shaft in my putter. I might go and measure it.
Is there a rough guide/rule for length of putter to hieght of player?

No real guide. Some tall players putt with bent elbows and some short putters keep there elbows straight and vice versa.
I would suggest take up you putting stance, let your arms hang naturally from your shoulders and where your hands are, thats where the grip should be, but as I said some players like to bend their elbows.
Are you straight or bent? That's not a pick-up line by the way :)

I'm the same. I stand bent with my eyes over the ball and my shoulders square (thanks to hours with the eyeline putting aid) but find with a 35 inch I am either bending too far to compensate so that I feel my shoulders don't rock so well but with a 34 I'm spot on.

I had a Ping Anser cut down several years ago and although my putting has been off int he time since I'm hoping my focus ont he short game this year will mean I can finally get to use it again with comfort

Reminds me of a thread Dec '07

"Good advice on putter shaft length Homer. Had a 35" Pal 5 for about 8 years but over the years my putting style has changed and I found that I was gripping further down the shaft but not by a consistant amount. Now had 1" lopped off and although long range puts (usually ok) no difference, short puts far better as I now grip on a consistant length."

You are always better off with a putter that is slighty shorter for you than slightly to long.

I do club repairs and refurbishment.
All you need from B&Q is a plumbers pipe cutting tool to take the excess of your shaft.
Anyone can do a regrip themselves.
This really is very easy to do yourself.

My Scotty is 33 inch i find it more comfortable over the ball like most of you a used to grip down on 35 inch putters,i am 5 ft 10 i think it depends on how much you bend over

Always used 35" putters until a few years ago when I left mine at home and had to borrow one from the shop. It was a 34" Ping Derby.

Won the Medal by 3 shots and putted brilliantly. Bought the putter and have stayed with 34" ever since - it just feels right.

My B60 was a standard 35 in. off the shelf, cut down to 33 and the original grip replaced foc (I'm 5.11). Even now I tend to grip a bit lower but there's less spare to get in the way.

Have a 34'' Oddeysey no 7 that I hold at the bottom of the grip. Feels like far too much grip left at the top so may have it cut down a couple of inches.

Anyone know how long/short Mickelsons is, it looks really short to me!
