I really fancy a Scotty.. not sure why, it may be the brand appeal or something more deeper. I have had a TM Spider for almost all thru my golfing life. I can easily three putt with it and somedays it can be hotter. I am sure I can three putt with a Scotty too.

So what is the deal with a Scotty Cameron? Is it science or placebo. How does one get fitted with a putter other than hit a few balls at the pro shop or the putting green outside? Is putter fitting a feel thing or can a common man get fitted a-la trackman for irons.

I got a scotty and it made no difference to my shoddy putting . Looking to change it to get some confidence back

Agreed, no putter has ever made me a better putter, some have made me worse (I seem to get on better if the putter has an insert). My current Big Fontana works perfectly well but that has not stopped me looking at a counterbalanced Spider Mallett.

Picked up a Dunlop "tour" putter for £9.99 best putting I've ever done, 1&2 putts, maybe the odd 3 putt but that's a hell of a lot better than my old 3&4 putts :D

I bought a newport 2.5 not long ago, i was mesmerised by it's beauty and convinced my scores would tumble.

Used it once then sold it !

After using larger putters, ody 2 ball, TM ghost spider, i could barely hold the S.C, it felt like i was putting with a shaft only.

I could see the appeal if i played on uber fast greens where it just needs a nudge to go 10-12 ft,

I'm not a member at agusta so i'll stick with my hefty mallet :p

the right putter for you will improve your stats; a good putting stroke will improve them more (and may require another putter to catch up with principle no 1!

the right putter isn't about a brand label

Feel for me....I tried a few out and bought the one I holed 3 times in a row from 6 feet.

According to game golf my putting average is exactly 2.0. Not unhappy with that.

For me it has to be feel not it a pro shop but "that feel" stood over a must hole putt.

I recently brought a Scotty although its great for distance control and feel on longer putts but doesnt feel safe for me on those nasty 4 footers. Be in the for sale section soon....

You can get a proper putter fitting using SAM putt lab, which is science.

Nothing wrong with choosing a putter based on feel, but I wouldn't call it a fitting as no PGA pro or clubfitter can tell you how each one feels in your hands.

Another member of the £9.99 Dunlop putter club here! Sunk four 1 putts last Friday, including one from 15 feet. But then I have also had 3+4 putt days with it. Perhaps it's down to the person wielding it...

exactly what I did. Hated the feel of the putter from a package set I started with tried a LOT of putters narrowed it down to 2 then tried mine for the first time on store recommendation nailed three in a row and never thought of buying another putter again.

It's a bit of both. There are certain putter designs (rather than makes) that suit different types of stroke. Players with a strong arc generally suit a different style from straight back-straight through players. But most makes offer examples of each, so if you need a putter with a lot of toe hang because you have a strong arc then you can get a Cameron, Ping, Odyssey or Taylor Made to suit you.

Some pros and most of the custom fitters will do putter fittings. I would be wary of those offered by major golf retailers.

The feel bit is different. If you really like the look of one brand over the others, and are convinced it will help you put better, that is fine too. You pays yer money and you makes yer choice.

I'm in this category......... I changed my putter 1st on buying my starter set, bought a ping sentina after being fitted on samlab..... It's one for a slight arc to straight! However I struggled with long putts and I new someone selling a SC.... I bought it and stats looked good for a while, but recently when hitting more GIR's I have regularly taken 40/45 putts a round as I am really struggling with distance control... I am currently trying the ping mallet on the practice ground!!!

Moral of the story is a particular putter brand won't make you a better putter....
But maybe the right style will!!

I always find that a new putter works brilliantly on the practice green until I actually hand over money for it, when it automatically stops working! A friend recently bought a very expensive SC Futura putter from a local golf store that offers a refund if you don't like it and return it in good condition within 2 weeks. It lasted 3 days. Another friend putts very well with a putter he bought for 25 Shillings (£1.25) from a department store in about 1960. More expensive is not always better!

I have to hit putts ideally on a proper green before parting with any cash. I've been to a SAM lab and seen what my stroke is like and what works and what I do wrong. I tried a load of Scotty's at Silvermere on the GM/Titleist day and they were good. Very good. I've already got a milled putter (Odyssey Protype #9) and I can putt well with it. I can also have shocking days. Same with the Ping Cadence Anser I'm using. Not milled and has TR (trueroll - variable grooves). I'm pretty flaky with the short ones at the moment. Not the putter and it's all me and I don't care what make it is, if you aren't putting well it isn't going to help. Lots of work on the putting green to come
