My brother has asked me if there's any difference in feel and performance between some putters. We're off to the shops next week to try some but I thought I'd ask you lot to see if there's any views.

He's looking at the Ping Redwood Piper, Rife Barbados, and the new Scotty Fastback.

Anyone got any views as to the good, the bad and the ugly? Is there much to choose between them?
These could interest me too - good job I'm going with him!!

It is, I feel, down to the idiot attached to the end of it more than anything else......

Look at what the Pros use - I would say no 2 putters are the same for any of them....I think I am right in saying that TW has used the same putter since his amatuer days, with just a few grip changes (the same one) along the way...

The Scotty Fastback is my choice - if you don't mind paying too much. You always will have confidence with a titleist product. When choosing a putter, go for the looks as it is the club you will be seeing most often on the course. Remember that when you try putters out, do it on your home course if you can, and if you can't just practise long and short putts :)

In my view the putting head and the striking of the ball is a simple thing, getting the right putter to work for your build, your swing, the right weight to suit, the right sight image for you, is a little more involved. Some people dont putt as well as they could because they use a putter thats too heavy or too light or at the wrong angle in the shaft or the wrong length. Its not a view shared by everyone but I think a putter that fits the puttee like a glove will produce better results than one that doesn't.

Its down to individual taste and feel. SOme people have 35" but grip halfway down the grip as that is comfy for them. Others like a really short shaft. It also depends what kind of cosmetic alignment aids you want from a simple line to the branding iron that is the TM spider. Finally the feel of the ball of the face will vary from person to person and maker to maker.

Quite simply, go with an open mind and have fun wasting an hour or so trying them all out.

Feel is king, some like a hard face that the ball flies off, some like me like a softer insert for better feel.

I must admit tho, even as a fan of Odyssey's, that Ping Piper S Redwood is fabulous, I tried it once at the Ping fitting centre and couldnt seem to miss with it.
I told myself that it was because the putting mat was 'hole biased' but hmmmm.......maybe not........ *thinks*

The Odyssey Black No 3 is beautiful too.

I'm expecting to choose something new after my fitting....unless my pro has other ideas, this is a front runner.

I've already tried one (34.5" 2 degrees up) which belongs to the assistant at my course.....very good....

I've been using a Ping Craz-E putter for the last 2 years. Coincidentally, I pulled out my 15 year old Ping Anser yesterday and took it down to the practice green for a try out after all this time. It's a lot lighter than the Craz-E, but after 5 minutes or so, I was holing a lot of long putts that I would usually just miss with the Craz-E. I've been thinking of putting it back in the bag for a few weeks now, may just do that.
