Anyone on here played Purdis or been a member there. I've heard good things about the course but not sure what the club is like and also whether as a rusty high handicapper the course would just chew me up and spit me back out again. Look forward to getting your views. Cheers T

Not played it, but know people who have. Superb course...often referred to as Ipswich Gokf Club, and believe it featured in the GM Top 100 (or 200) rankings. If you are in the general area, Woodbridge is a very nice track as well...with a very good 9 hole course there as well

Cheers. Yeah Woodbridge is a little bit of a trek for me. Hoping when all the house stuff is sorted I might be able to stretch and consider joining Purdis. Not sure I can make the numbers work but curious to know perspectives...

Good course not sure about the club. Consider Rushmere as an alternative - usually in good nick and good membership (at least it was a few years ago).

Personally wouldn't touch Rushmere. Can get very wet, and is on common land, so often have people just wandering across the fairway, or, when I last played there, had some kids playing in one of the bunkers on a par 3!

Purdis is a lovely course, it won't chew you up and spit you out as such, it's just difficult to score well on.

I'm not a member there, but i know a few and they are great. However, there are a few I have met that I couldn't get along with. I had one particularly bad experience there with the staff and a member. You are obviously going to get these types of people at the "best" club in the area.

Thanks guys. Not a fan of Rushmere. The layout is good but a lot of the course suffers from being on common land.

Will try and play Purdis over Xmas if I can but having seen their PG quality short game area I'd love to play there regulardy.

PS Dan you live in Ipswich, are a member of the forum and support West Ham - top man :)

Hacked around at Waldringfield for three years but had to take a year out this year because we moved house and had a lot of renovation to do do I had no time and no money.

Weighing up my options but realistic I have a choice of five courses: Waldringfield, Rushmere, Woodbridge, Purdis and Fynn Valley. Thing about Waldy is that although the course is desperately in need of investment the members are great. So many times I've gone up on my own and been invited to join other groups.

Whereabouts do you play?

Waldringfield is somewhere i've never actually played so i can't comment on it! Did Alex Lucas used to be the pro there?

I'm a member at Fynn Valley. I won't try and sell it to you unless you have any questions. But if you fancy a round, your always welcome. You will learn parts of a golf course so far from the fairway you never knew they existed!

Out of those, Woodbridge and Purdis would be the front runners. I don't think I would consider anything else if those two were in the mix

Purdis is a superb. I like everything about the place, the courses, the practice areas, the pro's, the pro shop, club house. I would really like to join but am committed until April. Always get a welcome. A proper members club.

Purdis is meant to be a cracking course. I know a few members there but haven't had the pleasure of playing it yet. Woodbridge also gets great reviews. I know a member at Rushmere who likes the place but it's not up to the other twos standards. Doesn't Purdis have a joining fee still? Worth considering but irrelivant if you plan on staying there for a few years.

Played most of the coursed in the area many times. Of those you have listed Woodbridge and Purdis are the only ones I would consider joining (I actually joined Woodbridge).

Purdis is a really nice course with very good facilities and I've never had an issue with members at the club (but it does have the private members club feel that you would expect for its status in the area, as does Woodbridge)

If/when I move back to Suffolk I would still join Woodbridge though. It generally holds up better all year round and the 9 hole course is very good. Overall facilities are comparable between the 2 and the quality of the main course on both is excellent, and a really good challenge. For me Woodbridge edges it but I'd be happy to join either.

Both are definitely worth the extra outlay over Waldringfield, Fynn Valey or Rushmere.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments. Still undecided at the moment. A lot will depend on how my finances settle down in the New Year but know what you mean about a small extra annual outlay for a big return...

Hi Dan

Plan is to join Waldringfield on the Newbourne membership rate £75 then pay as you go. I'll split my time between there and Purdis where I'll play as a member guest and then join Purdis next year when finances are more settled :)

Great call, Despite it's foils Purdis is always in incredible condition apart from randomly being closed today, and the practise areas are top notch.
