Professional Golf 2024 & 2025

Preferred lies is the wrong MLR for dealing with mud balls.
PL is for more extreme problems with course conditions, as it allows moving the ball to a more favourable position, on tour commonly up to a club length away. As such, it can materially affect the difficulty of the shot faced, especially around the edges of fairways and greens, and should not be implemented unless absolutely necessary.

The course has took a battering over the last couple of weeks with some very heavy rains - as well as mud balls huge divots have been taken , there is a lot of sand in old ones - there is no issue going to PL if those qualified tour refs deem it’s a requirement

Absolute drivel - there are huge divots take on tour every week and the fairways remain in generally great condition. The reality is that tours only ever implement PL, and do so regardless of the necessity; they never implement LCR which is all that is ever needed.

Or it’s just someone else’s opinion with some facts thrown in

But get yourself to Wentworth and let them know they are doing it all wrong

I’m sure they will be delighted to hear your vast experience of dealing with high level tour events

As they say the rules are the same for everyone - no one has an advantage or disadvantage and the crowds get to see good golf

The rules being the same is not the equivalent of nobody being advantaged or disadvantaged.

The advantage that a player with a skill set to deal with more varied lies is now negated because no one now has to deal with them and the crowd get to see fewer exhibitions of skill by highly skilled players dealing with difficult lies.

Personally I find more enjoyment from watching a skilled player execute a good shot from a difficult situation than an easier one.

Again it’s in the fairway 99% of the time , the difference will be very very slim - how many times is a PL on closely mown areas going to go from a difficult situation to an easier one

Completely missing the point, I'd guess intentionally, as usual.

I'm astonished that anyone actually cares that they use PL on Tour...
Just watch it and enjoy it....or don't.....
Its rules - im not astonished at all , if there was no preferred lies then the moans would be about not having PL

The point is very simple - they assessed the situation and made a judgement on what they see with the course

Let me get this right in my head. There’s you, probably sat at home, saying that the tour officials, competition officials, rules officials & greenkeepers, who were probably consulted, got it wrong. The professionals who do the job are wrong, and you’re right? Really?

I guess it comes down to how perfect do you want the course to be? All of those professionals are working to the remit of the course being immaculate. The alternative view is that they should play it as it lies. If the professionals worked to that remit, they wouldn't have PL.

It's true enough they only need LCR and not LCP
Although what difference will it actually make to players, spectators, tv viewers or the event placings itself if they use one over the other
