Professional Golf 2024 & 2025

That to me shows how it’s not great for the game

The aim should be winning majors , having your name amongst the greats and the elite of the game

Imo it’s a sad state and maybe a picture of modern society where the aim is to get people on social media watch them play

Maybe it’s just me but I haven’t seen one single shot he has hit , same with most of them apart from Peter Finch

Their self importance as highlighted by him is staggering

But I guess that’s the world these days

Thankfully it’s Open week - the best week in the sport

yeah theirs its a weird point of view for me to grasp.
Trying to put myself in their shoes and I think, a few at least, must see themselves as 'TV' personalities first and golfers 2nd
i.e golf just happens to be the vehicle that gets them exposure etc but lets say it was baking & not golf. They'd be just as content to have followers for their cakes/flans as they are now for golf!

Just goes to show, there's nowt so queer as folk

Pinnacle of golf is winning a major

He is in the sport of golf
I wonder if he doesn’t see him himself as a golfer but as an influencer.

In which case his aim is as many followers as possible not the lowest score possible.

Maybe he thinks he will pick up more followers by not playing in the tournament and having it being discussed on places like here than by missing the cut?

Think there is a lot in the second part

He could play in the tournament and be miles off

Don’t have to be a professional

Why do you think amateurs enter qualifying ?
I would say most amateur golfers trying to get in majors have some ambitions of turning pro at some point.

First part is definitely correct. I don't watch him a lot but I'm sure he's said he didn't have the competitive edge to make a proper go of pro golf, hence he turned his hand to YouTube.

I'm not sure about the last part, I think it's a just a case of him playing golf for content and followers and if he can't do that there's no point in him playing. Plus a little bit of trying to call them out for having a silly rule that prevents people filming, even from a distance. And maybe the idea did make him a little bit nervous, because of the first point about not wanting to compete.

I think he is looking at it with a business head on.
Create a bit of fuss by saying he won’t play if he can’t film and lots of middle aged sad golfers will be discussing him and I’m sure some will look him up and may even follow him.
Or
Play in a proper golf tournament on a course set up at its most difficult from the tips miss the cut (maybe by a long way) and lose people who realise actually they are just watching a bloke who is not even as good as the blokes they play with most weekends.

He is where he is due to good marketing not good golfing.

Fair play to him in my opinion the blokes a genius

YouTubers aren't playing professional golf though are they? It's like asking a bus driver about winning Silverstone in the F1 and saying "well, they're all drivers".

Yeah, it still makes it weird to hear though. I guess because most of us on here are a bit besotted with the game the idea of passing up that opportunity is quite far removed from our own thought process

He is very good in fairness, I think his handicap is around +4, but generally speaking you're probably right. If he can't film and create any content, then turning it down creates more engagement for him than actually playing in it and struggling to make or miss the cut.

True, it's almost like jealousy in a way - we would never turn it down, but also we'd never be asked. And while I probably wouldn't turn it down, I might then regret accepting it when I'm already eight over par after three holes. 😂

He does market himself very well I guess , I have only heard of him on here though

But then I don’t see the appeal of watching what amounts to a decent club golfer hit a ball - I want to watch the elite in golf

but it seems to appeal to some

I suspect the more do it the more it gets flooded

Even more so as more actual professionals seem to be doing it now

Hmmm
I love my golf, but no way on God's green earth am I rocking up at a tour event.
He's a golf media producer, not a professional golfer.

To be fair though Phil, his videos aren’t like watching a decent club golfer.

Ruling out the tour pro’s who have just entered the space, he is leading the way as a YouTube golfer. It’s not just watching the golf, it’s entertainment. His videos aren’t usually stacked with high profile guests, whether that’s players like Mickelson from golf, or NFL players…..his guests are a draw. Not many people have managed to get Tiger to give them a lesson on their channel.

I can understand him turning the place down, he’s not trying to be a pro golfer. He knows he’s an influencer.

Then I think he should have politely informed sponsers etc he won’t be needing any tour invites and if they do just turn it do immediately on the statement that it’s not for him because he doesn’t see himself as a serious golfer as opposed to posting a woe is me because they won’t ignore their media rights and let him film himself

It’s one or other for me

He could have easily played and had someone film on a phone etc

Not like you to encourage someone to break the rules?

Seriously Phil don’t let it bother you.
He’s obviously happy doing what he’s doing 🤷‍♂️

I honestly don’t see what the issue is 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
