Because they are tough and not many of them are set up for spectators and to be able to host tour events - it’s the same with heathlands etc

This is simply not true.
I disagree. Certainly on a lot (not all) US courses there is minimum penalty for missing fairways and rough isn't overly penal. At least on some of the DP venues they are more tree lined.

Fan favourites in contention with a packed leaderboard always drives the numbers higher - and that's what the tour has had a lot of this year. The numbers from San Antonio illustrate what happens when someone who isn't so popular appears to be running away with it.
