Professional Golf 2024 & 2025

So who do you think are the 3/4 players he is thinking off ?

Rahm , BDC and Koepka clearly 3 imo ?

Hatton , Smith or DJ as the 4th
Depends what he means by "missing" (because they're mates? because they draw a crowd/sponsors? because they're actually the best golfers?) and where he draws the line at "best golfers" (top-10? top-50? right now? all time? recent major winners? - ok, probably not the last one).

I haven’t watched the full interview but is Rory essentially saying that the PGAT’s failing are not because of LIV (aside for 3 or 4 players) ?

Kind of goes against the narrative that is repeatedly trotted out that LIV has ruined the mens pro game - something that those fans out in India right now would probably wholeheartedly disagree with.

Hatton
Smith
DJ
Reed

in addition to Rahm, BDC and Koepka

So 7 definitely missed, even if he is only quoting 3-4. I suspect he may only add Smith to the obvious 3. That's a judgement call.

If looking at “needle movers”

Then the 4th would depend on where the event was being played imo

In Aus then it’s Cam Smith , in Europe etc then Hatton

In the US then it’s prob DJ

Not sure on Reed as it’s been a lot of negative about him even before LIV

I think if you said to the PGAT you can have 4 players back they would go

BDC
Koepka
Rahm
DJ

Cam Smith moved across as Open champion and if not world number 1 at the time, he was definitely knocking on the door.

People might not like Reed but he is a major winner and he still challenges

DJ is a bit of a busted flush, but still a big name

Hatton is a fair point but he is up there now so worthy of mention

DJ and Reed aren't top anymore, they're on the scrapheap. Rory said 3 or 4 but the answer is 5 top players in LIV - Rahm, Bryson, Brooks, Smith and Hatton.

Reed was 12th at last years Masters, 3rd the year before. He was injured for the US Open, not eligible for the others, I think. He isn't scrapheap material yet. DJ isn't really competing now, he jumped to LIV at about the right time.

DJ is one of those players imo that if he bothered then he would be able to turn it on

But it’s down to motivation and just don’t think he is motivated or bothered now

Reed - ability is there and on a good day could win another green jacket

So was Cameron Young, but I doubt Rory would consider him one of the best either? Reed obviously does well at the Masters because he's won there and can hit a draw, but I wouldn't consider him one of the world's best these days.

I wouldn’t consider Speith, Max Homa, Justin Thomas or Sagith as world-leading either - but the PGA Tour and its acolytes will try and sell that to you

The return of a few family favourites is a short term fix for the PGAT. A couple of really good youngsters that capture the imagination is what's needed long term. Something like the young, carefree McIlroy. Maybe Charlie Woods. Really any fresh new face that can displace the same old establishment guys we see day in day out.

A bit more international flavour would help too. Something like a 2007-8 vintage Camillo Villegas bursting on the scene. Aberg or Macintyre going up another level (although hardly a fair expectation - both have done pretty damn well!).
Anyway, Pebble Beach and the return of Spieth and Scheffler do make this week a more interesting watch already.
