Professional Golf 2024 & 2025

Alan Shearer was a member at Archerfield and used to play occasionally on a Sunday morning, I suppose fitting it in with his motd schedules, i think he played with Tommy Craig and maybe another couple of other Newcastle staff, we played around the same time and spoke to them afterwards a couple of times. When Renaissance opened one of them told us that Shearer had joined there too and the debenture was around £100k but there were other rumours around at the time suggesting £60k, maybe different levels of membership, certainly not cheap
It certainly wasn't that figure in 2007 when I was shown round and discussed membership.

Nearer £30k.

At that time a lot of the members were from USA including a number of NFL players.

Yeah that's a fair comment, I don't think as many joined as they were hoping and folk were saying they would have to drop it substantially, I think the amount you quote is probably around the rate now

As others have said, the club pays to host. It's a big marketing exercise, that's why events are usually held at resort courses.

There's little incentive for a private members club to host a tournament, unless they are on a big recruitment drive.
I've never known a club to pay.

Those empty and clearly unused/unfinished houses around the edge of the entrance and hole 1 at the Renaissance haven’t changed since last year. That definitely speaks of somebody’s sales and financial model not quite going to plan…

On a more positive financial note, the crowds seemed to me much larger at the Scottish Open this year vs last, and the TV comms report that tomorrow is a capacity sellout and Sunday may well sell out too. Easiest to see at stadium hole: was deserted for much of last year on first 2 days but generally heavily populated for most of the day now. So in some rather important respects the location and settled venue are working very well. Weather probably helps 🤣.

Good to see Aaberg / Aberg showing form. Donald no doubt following closely.

The BBC leaderboard oddly has it listed as a 'World Golf Champs' 😯

Rough weather over in Valdarama, round not completed. But maybe one of those occasions where the shotgun aspect is fairer to the field - all out in the same weather.

The weather was cold and windy last year. Warm and sunny this year.

Early coverage is on sky sports + channel 412, never knew that was even a channel I thought it was strange there was no coverage until 3pm on the main channel

There’s more! If you go down the sports menu system there are many events that are televised but aren’t on any numbered channel 🙃. Lots of tennis and rugby league but occasionally golf events too.

Watching this live (yesterday) I was expecting it to end badly
Forget how good all the pros are.
He was behind a tree trunk on the next hole and scrambled another par.

Seen a bit of chat along the likes of does McIlroy really want to win today as impacts on next week.
I was never really into the superstitious side (like Masters par 3), and Mickelson did manage to win both, albeit 12 years ago.
Know I shouldn't but I'm in the 'anyone but Clark' camp for today 😅
