with over 500 full members and some low handicap juniors trying to get times on a saturday , it was decided to allow members who wished could play on the friday as long as you enter on the computer and post you doe before you play. and still be in the sat, comp. as long as the same format as sat was used i.e. 3 ball , and no match play [ can't mix the two ]
distance between tee's and pin positions must be same distance, i.e. if you move pin 3yrds back tee moves 3yrds forward. weather conditions can change day to day but also from am, to pm, we have had 80 players on a friday it frees up times on the sat, what do you think

Personally think if its going to be the same comp on friday and saturday then they shouldnt move the pins between the friday and the saturday, not sure they do but i think you are implying that they do and for me this is wrong.

Our midweek comps are now run monday to friday, all one comp and it works fine, but pins stay put for the whole comp

I'm an ex member of bellshill, they started this system about 4/5 years ago.
When I could I would play on the Friday, preferred the 3 1/2 hr round to the sat 4 1/2 hr round.
I'm pretty sure the reason for moving pins, tees was if someone had a bounce game fri it would be deemed as having played competition course if they had a Saturday time.

this happens at my course, but only occasionally, due to only having 9 holes getting all the players round twice is nigh on impossible during the shorter light days, so th pins stay as they are and about 12-16 players then play on sunday.

works ok in my opinion

dont see any problem with being able to play friday or saturday but think the tees and pins should remain in the same place, one of my previous clubs used to run the montrhly medal all weekend you just booked to play when you wanted it works fine you have the choice to play a comp and bit more flexibility to play when it suits you.

A similar thing used to happen at my old club.
All comps ran on a Saturday or Sunday, you could play either.
You could also play a bounce game Saturday and the Medal Sunday.
No real issue with this but the main problem is with CSS.

We had one particular weekend when the Saturday was dry, warm and calm - some very good scores came in.
Sunday was gales and rain - best score was 10 shots worse than the previous day.
Due to the number of good scores on Saturday, CSS came down. Everyone who played Sunday went up 0.1
In reality, the Sunday scores would have made the comp reductions only, CSS would have been about +5.
So many of those that went up Sunday, shouldn't have.
It's a problem - unless CSS is calculated every day.

Don't agree with them changing the course but if it means more people get to play I think its a great idea. As for changes in the weather, it happens between morning and afternoon on any given comp day...

I don't really agree with it to be honest. Weather conditions can be complete polar opposites, which could ruin people on one day having a shot at the win. It should be up to the club to provide enough tee times on one day for the competition, or releasing tee sheets a few weeks in advance, and people actually planning in advance and getting names down sharpish.

Weather can change by poles in a matter of hours. So with the same token people in the morning may have a better chance of the win than those in the afternoon if the weather is better and vice versa.
Look at yesterday for example, I went outside the office at 1410 and it was bright sunshine, got back to my desk at 1425 and it was lashing down and the sky was black.

This is true, however, I still do not agree that a competition be split over 2 days!

Will the course be exactly the same though? Greens cut both days? very unlikely. I know it's a relatively small thing, but it can make a difference. It may not make much sense, but I just don't agree with it. Personal preference and all that!

it will make a difference, and so do many many other factors!

however, the really important point is that as many people as possible should be able to enjoy this wonderfull game in all it's glory - so good committees use all the resources and procedures they can to let as many people play consistent with retaining fair competition.

bad committees hide behind keeping it simple, and everyone being back in time for lunch.

most are elected, so the views of the majority should ultimately be reflected everywhere (I understand that some places are still waiting for this though...)

Stupid question (as I've never played in a golf competition), but why can't they run two separate competitions - a Friday one and a Saturday one. Surely what matters is that people are playing in A competition, regardless of what day it is. Both can be given equal important/points or whatever internal scoring is used, surely?

Isn't the problem here that it's the same competition with potentially a different course and conditions?

OMG! The grass might grow between morning and afternoon! And, and it might rain, or it may get windy! Where's my tinfoil hat!

Sorry, I just couldn't stop myself.

Its just a game, and as Duncan Mackie says in post #17 the more that play the better. Or clubs could limit the numbers able to play and get even more complaints - its half full, not half empty.
