Problems Chipping

Murph, Ive seen this too with my playing partners, I think bunkers are a different animal as you are swinging relatively harder and also the abrasive nature of the sand helps get the ball spinning.

My playing partner often tries to create back spin, usually ends about up 50' in the air and 15 yards past the hole, me, I am happy with my chip and run with any club before fancy lob shots.

that could be anything. shafts, stance, swings, balls, clubs, tee height. Thtas really only something a pro could see.

Ohh i see i think im gonna get my first lesson soon,my best on my local course is 81,par 72 :)

Hopefully it helps me :)

I want my game to improve alot,i think thats what im struggling on.

I always seem to leave it 10-12ft away.

Coming out of a bunker on Monday, my partner got screw back on Topflight titanium distance, with a 15 year old sandwedge. It can be done with hard balls, but it is not easy or consistent.

Sand on the face of the club will make it spin much more. The next time you're in a bunker, dont wipe the sand from the wedge, try a chip with it. You will get more spin that way.

Birdie.....this was your comment....

Lots of folk on here say they're a waste of money...they're not if you want your golf going to low handicap territory. Fact.

It didn't come with any caveat about links greens or whatever. I agree with you about stopping the ball on a hard links green, sure. You simply implied that is was not possible to play decently unless you used a really good, high spin/soft ball. I disagreed, but low h'cap players are going to use these balls anyway. For the rest, they probably are a waste of money.....and why would anyone who rarely hits a straight ball want to get even more wayward off the tee? If I hit my driver and f-way woods accurately enough to manage with even more side-spin, I would play the best ball around!!

I didn't intentionally attempt to misconstrue your comment. I am 100% happy to agree that the only hope of playing really accurate irons (with enough spin) and pitches on hard greens is with a soft ball....of course.

Sorry Dave, I'm doing a Victor Meldrew today. Need a holiday!

I know how you feel....... :) No sorry necessary, i was just spicing up the thread with a bit of an argument!!

(note to self.....stop contradicting others, especially those that can play properly :))

Erm i dont have a handicap cause i dont know how to work them out lol

But im always around 81-90 mark on my local course :)

Tip Top......why don't you work out your h'cap?

Here's the easy way. Play 3 rounds and don't cheat in any way.

Take your best card (score) and reduce anything worse than a double bogey to a double bogey. You might want to use a spare column. Example.....if you had a 7 on a par 4, mark it down as a 6.

Find out your new score, and you'll be there....almost....

Take that score and see how many over the SSS score (written on the card somewhere) you were.

Then report back here with the SSS of your course, preferably the white and yellow if you are still confused.

NB....have a careful look at your 3 scores though. If you had one that had lots of good scores, but a few really big numbers, that might be the better card.....

Thanks for the reply golfer.

I have saved my 3 cards i have goota find them somewere.

I never cheat cause i you dont feel like you have achived something.

I will get my cards and TRY to work it out lol

the other way is to put the scores for the three cards on here, with the par for each hole and the sss for your course (as rguk has said) and one of the guys will know which card to take

add three cards together and divide by three & add this number to the SSS of your course = Hcp

I think you mean MINUS the SSS from your average. :)

When I first played for a h'cap (1993), I think the secretary used the average of 3 cards. Now, they just take the best.
The trouble with the best is that a good few pars mixed with a few triples is going to give you a lower figure than a load of bogeys.....

If you bogey'd 14 and had 2 pars and 2 doubles, you'd probably get 18 plus or minus the difference between SSS and par.

If you had say 6 pars, 8 bogeys, 2 doubles and 2 trebles (which is still 18 over gross), you'd probably get 16 plus or minus the difference between SSS and par. This seems a good deal!!!! BUT if you had all 6 pars plus 3 bogeys on one set of 9 holes....you'll probably get near single figures.....no joke.....

As a side anecdote......I think a safer scheme would be to somehow incorporate the Stroke Indexes into handicapping.

True h'cap story

Example.

Player A) Best card 15 over SSS - Par'd SI 1 and 2 (455/427 yd par 4) and got 12

Player B) Best card 15 over SSS - Par'd SI 18,17,16 and birdied SI 15. got 11.5

Who's more likely to have the "potential" to do well off the medal tees??
