Hi All

I've just ordered a new car (not brand new) & picking it up on saturday. I've asked the dealer to swap my private plate onto the new car... he's going to the local DVLA to get the tax for my new vehicle at the same time. He's got both log books for my old car & the new one but he says he's unsure if this can all be done at the same time & seems to think I have to retain my plate from the old car & then put it on the new one afterwards (which will cost more & involve me having 2 trips to the DVLA). Has anyone got any experience of doing this.

Thanks in advance

Gaz

no i'm sure he can do it all for you but you may have to supply the insurance certificate but that may not be the case.

he can do it for you i'm sure.my last employer had the dealership transfer the plate over on to his own car and he did nothing other than go pick the new car up from the dealership after it was all done.

I have always retained the plate, handed over my old car with its old plate on assuming that is what the dvla allocate it then I change the plate on the new car at a later date.

Yes he's got my insurance, they say they can do it but it will take 2 weeks...I know I can't put my new plates on until I get the new log book but surely they can send the forms off at the same time thus allowing me to pick up the car this weekend

Our local VLO (Brighton) won't do cherished number plate transfers "by hand" now. We have to do them by post. They can take up to 14 days, sometimes longer. Have you given him the serial number off of your old tax disc along with the MOT, and signed the necessary transfer form? There is a little bit more to it than just taking the relevant reg docs down. Putting the cherished plate on retention will cost a little bit more (I think it's an additional £25.00 for the retention fee) but is sometimes easier when you require the new car in a hurry. It won't mean another trip to the VLO, you can do it by post.

Never been involved with the process but we have many of our sales vehicles come back for number plates to be changed a few weeks after selling them.

Yes they have my MOT & I've already given the dealer a completed transfer form with the tax disc details on it. All they have to do is hand everything over to the DVLA when getting the tax for my new car....he's letting me know tomorrow so we'll see....it's not a great problem I was just trying to save £25 and all the hassle

Your local VLO may be different to ours and do them on the same day. Good luck, but it sounds like the dealer is doing everything right.

Interestingly enough (for me anyway) in the States they're called vanity plates! Very apt I thought.

What car are you getting and what is your current car with the private plate?

Swapping a knackered old Rover for a Mazda 2 Sport, seems to be sorted now, I'm retaining the reg & then will put on the new one when I get the log book, costs another £25 but the dealer is paying
