Pride vs Consistency!

Up until about 5 years ago I didn't carry any woods as I was too inconsistent. I used to hit 3-iron off the tee and put up with the loss of distance in favour of accuracy.

Now I am in the happy, or unhappy, situation where I don't have what I would call a bad club. I'm just as happy hitting driver, 3-iron or wedge so I use the club that will get the job done. One of my favourite sayings is "I am capable of hitting every club in the bag just as badly as the others" which in a backwards kind of way is my way of telling myself that hitting 3-iron off the tee instead of driver is no guarantee that I won't get into trouble so use the right club for the job and commit to it.

However, in answer to your question, take consistency all day long. If you're happy with your 3-wood, keep using it. There's no point hitting it 20 yards further if you're under a tree :)

Sounds like good advice to me. I'm still striving to be consistently rubbish, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (and I'm fairly sure it's not the 3:45 from Paddington).

sounds to me that you just haven't found the driver for you yet?

If you are lucky you will find a driver that suits you and you can hit just as well and therefore further than your 3 wood.

There's two ways about this... hit as many drivers as you can and pick the one that works the best, or... get custom fit!

Even if you only hit a driver 15 yards further than your 3 wood, then it can make all the difference between being able to make the green with your second shot or not. One measly yard can make the difference!

You are selling yourself short by not having that extra club in your bag. A driver is a necessity in my book, find the one that suits you and you have so many more options.

If the driver is mis behaving then you can go to your 3 wood, if you only carry the 3 wood where do you go if that mis fires?? Two well hit 3 irons only covers circa 400yds, that leaves you with a lot of "par 5s" during the round.
