Preferred lies, did I cheat ?

Only the same as using your longest club to measure a drop, you are allowed 6 inches any direction no nearer the hole. you played to the rules, well done.

Err... not the same at all. The OP was fine in moving the ball (within the limits of preferred lies that is) but using your longest club isn't (necessarily) permissible. You must measure relief using the club with which you would have played the shot as if relief wasn't necessary. (See the note in the definition of nearest point of relief)

Not quite correct. You have to use the club you intend to play to "determine" the nearest point of relief. Once determined, if you get one clublength from that point then you can use any club to measure.

As for OP. No problem, you were within the rules.

now that's plain silly. no wonder so many get confused. it should be easy - take all measurements with the club you 'declare' you will use - then use it! that'll stop broomhandle drops!

LOL. Always the biggest club in your bag (broomhandles are only a bit longer than a driver) when measuring. When establishing where to measure from use the club you intend to use for the next shot. However, even then, if you change your mind after the drop, that's OK. What's to be confused about !! :D :D

Hi guys. First effort on the forum and not before time!

It is preferred lies. I will mark, clean and place the ball 95%

of the time. Who knows what clag is lurking under the ball and

there might be a nice worm cast to tee the ball on

No way you cheated. Rules there to be used, not abused. Pros get a drop for someone dropping a hanky on the ground if it affects their line!!!
