When I play a course I always take two practice swings before the shot and waggle the club to loosen any tension. But should I go through this ritual on the range? The temptation for me is to hit balls in quick succession without the routine. Does it matter as much on the range, or should I go through the routine nevertheless?

yeah, its good practice to play a game of golf in your head on the range

eg imagine your on the 1st at your course, hit a driver or whatever then a 7 iron etc

i dont do this though :P

but yeah pre shot routine should always be used and also stand behind the ball and try visualise the shot

Try to stick with it at the range. Apart from anything else it'll stop you getting into range mentality and hitting balls one after another especially if you hit a bad one. I know if I do that I'm rushing to get another ball to make sure I hit it properly.

As a rule I tend to step off the mat after every shot and then go through my address (grip, alingment and posture) before every shot.
