Pre round nutrition

The guy has come on asking about diet, how can he use it to help improve his golf and we are giving him options! Not stating facts that are total tripe.

You are becoming quite difficult to discuss this with.

To clarify, if any of you are saying that pre-round food improves your golf or "shaves shots off your handicap" then I would say yes, utter, total, unrefined TRIPE. A cereal bar doesn't knock in a 10 footer to halve the match, nor does it give you the right fuel to focus your mind as you start to tire or whatever other bilge you want to dress it up as.

I am saying eat whatever you feel like either before, during or after a round because it won't meaningfully affect your score, unless you let it.

Why because I have a valid opinion and you don't understand it?

I tell you what since you can't get your head round what i'm saying google golf and nutrition. Straight away all the big golf websites come up with why it's important and how it can effect your muscles, mind and in turn play.Better yet buy Tiger Woods golf instruction book, first chapter the importance of health and fitness for lowering scores. If not Player has an instructional aimed at the amateur, it focus's on 3 key areas for lowering your score............sand play, scoring and life which you guessed it, is DIET and fitness.

In conclusion what you eat does effect your golf!

I can't be bothered trying to teach the class clown anymore so if none of the above satisfies you, you WIN! If that's what it take to leave you satisfied, take it, you deserve it buddy!

I understand what you are saying. I understand about fitness and nutrition. My main sport is squash and diet and fitness are absolutely crucial to being a good player.

What I don't agree with is the level of emphasis you place on diet relative to golf. If Craig Stadler can win 13 PGA titles then surely that points to fitness and diet being a bit less important than you are claiming? Or is he the exception that proves the rule? if he is, then there are loads more like him.

How did Bobby Jones play to the level he did without knowing everything that current sports science advocates? Was he just lucky? Same Snead had the best swing in the history of the game and he didn't get it through diet and nutrition.

I understand that fitness fanatics like Player and Woods would suggest that it is important but that is just one way of skinning a cat. The fat scratch golfers of the world hold a different view and are probably more relevant to the club golfer than Tiger Woods.

having a better diet and fitness level will help your life in general. not necessarily going to help you shoot better scores. tiger woods is talking (I presume) about you general diet, of course he will add in the banana mid round as it fills pages.

things that will improve you game

lessons (identify the fault and start working on the fix)
practice ( key aspect of improvement)
buying a new club (yes everyones fav method and tbh it has its merits. sometimes a club just works for you or changing to more suitable bounce wedges can have an immediate impact on scoring. adding a certain club that you didn't use before ie. a wood or hybrid or even dare I say it a chipper. yes all these can improve your scoring.
course management or as butch calls it course IQ (can dramatically improve scores without changing a thing about a swing) ask someone In a bounce game to caddy for you for 9 holes in shot selection. see how they would play a hole or certain situation and ask them to select the shots in line with your standard of play. if they are asking you to bomb and big draw off the tee then play a low stinging cut into the green they are going about it the wrong way.
change of mind-set ( one for the NGT guys. yes being positive and realistic (see course IQ) can improve scores.

finally way way down the list would be something like what you ate on the hours leading up to the golf or even during. try not to play hungry, eat whatever you like out there.

I mentioned earlier that I don’t take care about what/when I’ve eaten so I’ve no idea if it helps or hinders my scoring... but when numerous people post that simply waiting a few minutes on a slow group ‘wrecked their round’ then I think its totally possible that being hungry/thirsty could wreck someone’s round

Whether its a nutrition thing or mental I've no idea

Good point.

If you're going to be sensible, you're in the wrong thread!

I think its all about giving yourself the best possible chance to play your best, there are no guarantees it will but it certainly gives you a better chance! non-athletic PGA tour golfers are being mentioned, this doesnt mean they dont eat correctly prior/during the round.

i can guarantee you, larger golfers such as De Jonge, and Stadler dont eat mars bars and bacon sandwiches during their rounds, they will be eating and drinking the correct things. They are just probably making different choices outside of the game (such as eating poorly and non working out etc)

you will never be able to attribute a poor shot directly to poor nutrition, but it may well be one of the things that helped contribute towards that bad shot/poor round etc

i am always of the opinion that if the pros do it, there is probably a good reason. They are the pinnacle of what we all love, if it didnt work, they probably wouldnt be doing it.

I've noticed if i eat i snickers before i play i slice the ball, a mars bar causes a hook. I stay well away from twix's......they give me shanks!!!

Interesting thread this again

Personally I take a 1 1/2 litres of water in the summer as know about keeping hydrated from my mountain biking days, like to have a nice fry up before - however do not like to feel bloated as others have said

In the winter prefer locozade

A petty hate of mine is when somebody asks for a drink of my water like most sports its all about being prepared for the round and I carry................. these days

If hungry during the round I'll sometimes have a breakfast type bar, however if I've had a fry up I don't need anything and do like to feel a little hungry

After I like to have a sauna, steam and jacuzzi always nice

Welcome by the way its not always like this, I'm a relative newbie myself

Maybe people should look at what they eat all week as well??? If you spoke to a good sports nutritionist, they would tell you about how healthy clean eating promotes health and well being and in return can lead to great benefits in sports performance.

Westernised diets are a major cause of disease, too many cabs and not enough fresh veg and fruit are common problems. Would benefit from this not just for playing golf, but sleeping better, more alert mentally at work etc.

I totally agree, a all round healthy diet is good for you, you won't get me arguing there. It's the notion that eating Granola bars when you play golf is going to improve your performance that I don't agree with

When I was 11 or 12 years old, one day I finished my paper round and caddied three rounds.
I think a bacon roll and a Scotch pie may have been consumed at some point throughout the day, cant remember 'hydrating' myself other than a slug of water from the dodgy drinking fountain........but...... I survived, and I got up at 6.30am next day to do my paper round and go to school.
At away clubs i always get a bacon roll , except when at a local Jewish club who told me sternly on my first visit "we don't do bacon son", i just never thought.

I fail to understand why so many posters get so strident and stroppy with the OPs post.

One of the main errors in the arguments against taking a snack or fluids seems to be trying to make the point that some golfer's are not of athletic build and by taking examples of Professionals who don't. Their fitness or lack of it and their metabolism is unique to them.

The point is how you yourself feel - if a drink and a snack helps YOU that's all the reason you need because that is more likely to help you continue to concentrate and yes that might mean you make a putt that you'd otherwise might have missed.

The facts are well established that during any 3 or 4 hour period of activity it would be wise to take on fluids and a snack like a banana can help those who have a quicker metabolism ride out a dip in their blood sugar levels.

I fail to why there is any contention when the facts are so well known.

Have to be honest with my octopus having a fit golf swing, the addition of nutritional food won't make the ball go straighter. The only exception to this is my preference for coconut water when it's really hot as I personally feel I am more hydrated with that than a sports drink
