Practising on the course the day before a competition

It is irrelevant that the course is slightly different. You need that condition of competition that specifically permits casual play on the course on the first day by second-day competitors. If you don't have it, then these players are breaching 7-1b by practising on the course on a day of the competition regardless of there being changes in pin positions.

I suppose we must have it then

There was a little 9 hole par 3 course at a previous club I was at that because it had no OOB to the right of the 9th hole it was deemed as an integral part of the course and so you couldn't play on it prior to a comp to warm up, what a waste and stupid rule that is.

I think someone quoted his club's competition rule earlier on the thread. Here is ours -it's very simple and incorporates the change of pin positions:

In terms of Rule 7-1b, a player who is competing on the second of the competition days may play on the course on the first competition day. Hole and teeing grounds may be positioned differently on each day of the competition, but on any one day, holes and teeing grounds will be in the same position for all competitors

Not inherently a stupid rule.

All that needs to happen in this instance is for the area to be defined ("the area to the right of the 9th hole" would be sufficient) as a practice area and everyone's happy.

The exception to the rule is clearly worded...

Well I think I'm sorted now anyway, thanks again to all for your interest and words of wisdom. Now I just need my club to decide on when to allow practice with a condition of competition and when to stick to rule 7-1b. Happy golfing everyone! Dollo
