What did I learn?

I need to do a hell of a lot more short game practice.

Still, pencil bag with wedges, putter, glove and balls is now a permanent fixture in the boot and if I have an hour to spare it'll be down the short course to get it right.

haha,

Well done for getting out and doing it but like you say, it'll take a lot more from where that came from!!

You'll reap the rewards for it I'm sure Imurg.

I hit the short game area on Saturday at Sand Martins looking at the hinge and hold from a thread on here. My chipping is so bad I'll try anything and to be honest anything is probably better than what I have. Some progress and bunker play was better. I think I just need to really get to work on it and find a tecnique and trust it. It's a mental thing now I'm sure. Short game is the key though. My putting needs an MOT too

I played my first 18 holes of the year today - and wasted around 11 shots on shot chips and pitches < 30yards.

I'm okay when the ball is sitting up on the grass which allows the club to slide under the ball, but the weakness is when the lie is firm (bobbly winter ground).

To be fair my 100-20 yards pitching was decent - not good enough but ok. It was the little chips around the green that I struggled with. I did this last year as well. Played all winter, practiced all Spring, struggled all summer and played well all Autumn...

Sounds like some positive time in there. Just don't resort to putting through the thick rough during the bad spells!!
