Just got back from a family break with the in-laws to Centre Parcs. All went very well, except for the cold. We are now talking about possibly all going away together in September/October somewhere a bit warmer. I've planted the Portugal seed and it seems to be doing very well (green shoots are emerging).

As the only golfer I will be playing on my todd but was wondering if you guys had any suggestions of regions to stay in, villas we could consider and most importantly courses I should look to play. I'm hoping to be nearing a handicap of 18/20 by then so don't want anywhere too unforgiving.

All suggestions appreciated so I can get my foot in the door before everyone else starts looking :D

As the family are going you should look at the Oceanico website, they provide apartments in various locations and can organise your golf days as well.

When you say "Portugal" do you mean mainland Portugal or the Algarve region?

Algarve would be nice but I'm not overly flush so mainland alternatives more than welcome. In an ideal world it would be tivoli (featured in GM) but on my current salary that's never gonna happen!

I didn't realise The Algarve wasn't on the Mainland Smiffy....it was the last time I was there. :D

Carvoeiro is my favourite place on The Algarve, great place with everything in it for the family and loads of good courses around it like Penina,Pinta,Gramacho and the Oceanico Faldo and O'Connor courses.

Tut! Me and my geography!! I know it's all part and parcel of the same country, just that I've only ever visited the Algarve "region" and most golf travel companies will differentiate between the two. Maybe I needed to use a different word to "mainland"
;)

I have been going to Algarve with family for last 15 years or so.

I personally find Villamoura the best for location/ proximity to golf, entertainment, airport and water parks etc. Stay a little further out as the more central areas can be expensive now the Euro is so low.

Lots and lots of great courses close by and you can usually get a game either on your own or mixed in with others - over the years I have met many many new golf friends this way and always have a good time.

Dont worry too much about being 17-20 or ability too much - its holiday golf and everyone mucks in and enjoys it and is fairly easy going.

Best courses for me in order San Lorenzo, Old Course, Victoria, Monte Rei, Val de Lobo, Quinta, Pinhal, Faldo, O Connor , Millenium, Pinheiros Altos and very lastly Laguna.

Have a great trip
