I am not a football fan in anyway shape or form, that said I do feel sorry for all associated with Portsmouth following them going into administration. I think it is time for a serious wake up call to all premiership teams regarding the wages payed to players. How many other teams are hanging on by the skin of their teeth paying massive wage bills to foreign players. The F.A needs to step in and follow other sports with salary caps and also caps on the number of foreign players allowed in these teams for the good of the game.Let's be honest here, 70 million in debt, how can any team survive. What does everyone else think?

agree entirely, but half the problem is new owners taking over on borrowed money, look at Liverpool and Man U, It is only their success in the Premier league and getting into europe that is keeping them afloat, that and windfalls on transfers (Ronaldo).

However, if either team has a crash in form and fails to get into europe, then they will be in trouble.

Also if clubs like Chelski and Man City lose their Sugar Daddys, then i can see similar problems.

But then you end up with teams like Burnley who are in pretty good financial shape, but not contending.

Footy has to cut its cloth etc

The whole business model is flawed, they need to have a hard look at the model they use in american football which has resulted in an increase in the number of top flight teams/franchises. This would also require some proper structure for bringing youngsters into the game.

I agree, if you go back twenty years the first division was just as entertaining, the level of football played was as good and young British talent was nurtured and relied upon to fill the places the teams had. In the end though it is up to the fans to accept less foreign players in the teams until we get back on a more even keel and wages can be brought back to acceptable levels. I do not deny anyone the chance to earn large salaries but at the cost of a club, something has to be done.

But are the players not the key thing to why people want to watch it? If the players were rubbish then no-one would watch...if Chester City suddenly signed 7 Brazilian World Cup players, people would to and watch in their 1000s....

Therefore, should the players not be paid their worth and their share of the TV monies involved....

Isn't this the mindset that got Portsmouth where they are now though?

The difference is spending money you have (or at least have something to cover your liability) rather than money you don't....Chelski just spend Abramovich's money and as a 'business' actually do okay....

I think you've only got to look at my club Fulham. Although we've got a fairly wealthy chairman we've not signed that many high profile players (ok got a few top quality journeymen like Johnson, Murphy etc) but we still make a loss each year. We are hampered by the size of our ground etc and even getting this far in Europe and FA cup are a real boost in terms of revenue but our priority will always be premier league survival.

I think Porstmouth have only done what Leeds did and get carried away on success and belived that money would add to the side that won the cup and they would be challenging for Europe. Sadly I think the owners were not footballing men and the business side has been poorly run with more an more money invested to try and buy success with the results we see now. I don't like Portsmouth but I do feel sorry for their loyal fans who've had to pay out their hard earned cash to watch their side get stripped and play without cohesion as one owner after another comes in and mucks it up further

Totally agree and i only tkink its a matter of time before a bigger club is in a similar situation, however its also down to the club to look further into these people taking over clubs even though they seem to be multi millionaires most of their money is based on loans and sooner or later these loans need to be repayed.I think the pay structure is way out of control I.M.O. there needs to be a pay limit and soon.

Ok, Pompey have gone bust. What the flip has that got to do with foreign players? English players are just (more?) as expensive.

The two issues are totally seperate.

A football team is a business, not a necessity. It's supply and demand for the local neighbourhood and accompanying fans. If the fans aren't coming then you have to scale down, not set your bar even higher.

Portsmouth goes bust, no big deal, another local team will benefit and become the attraction, which in time with a proper business plan they may do well.

Go Portsmouth Rangers!

A pity it had to be Portsmouth but this was inevitable, as it has been for years. I've long argued and still maintain, there are too many clubs chasing a diminishing pool of both cash and talent, so most definitely, this won't be the last.

Of course, ousting Pompey from the premier in this way means another mediocre team will stay up (not that Pompey were any great shakes this season, though that's hardly surprising).
