So today I went to my local club, knole park golf club, and hit a few balls. There were two others on the range, so I wasn't too bothered. Decided to do a few holes, so lined up on the first and hit an awful shot. After that , another man came along and asked to hit with me. I said yes of course, and he was obviously better than me. I got a 4 on the first luckily, and he got a 3. The next hole we both played was awful, both shooting over 8 haha. We both knew we would rather play by ourselves, so I skipped onto the 17th tee and he went to the 3rd. I went birdie par , and he got a par. Shows for me, that mentally I prefer practicing by myself .
Your opinions ?

Concur - I can often play to single figures on my own but playing with others, especially with a medal card in hand, I do well to break 90 - much of golf is in the head, I find any tension at all can wreck a swing

I do like to practice and play rounds on my own, booked in for 8am tomorrow actually. I don't think if I was playing a practice round I would like to be joined by somebody I don't know.

I do think though if you practice with somebody else who you get on with and is commited to improving it can work out well. You will spur each other to practice when one can't be arsed and can discuss ideas and play little competitions and side bets.

I'm another who if I'm out on the course solely to practice a few things I'd rather not join up with anyone else. I'd rather work on whatever and see if it works when it matters and not have to worry about a score. If I'm just out to play a game then I'll rock up with anyone

You can have competition without anyone else being there. YOu have a PB to beat, you have par to beat, as well as mini comps like hitting as many fairways or greens as you can or taking as few putts as possible.
Playing 2 balls against each other is a good one.

I can't practice with anyone. I tend to start playing safer golf and lose focus on areas I'm working on if playing with someone else.

If I'm going with the specific intent of practicing something I've been working on, then I will always play on my own. You can't practice when you've got someone else tagging along.

If however my game is in good shape, I would try to play with someone else as I get lazy on my own and the tinkerer in me starts putting thoughts into my head that I don't need.
