Playing while listening to music

My reason would be for general calming and concentration. The music would be background level, although as I said these are hearing aids. My hearing is very poor and even with them I still do not hear ”fore” being shouted, and rely on other to relay the shout for me. I can’t hear bells that a rung on holes with blind tee shots either.
I understand that it could possibly be heard by others nearby as I have had people close by say they can hear the wind noise from my aids on a very windy day, which is much louder in my ears than any music I would play.
"General calming and concentration". Breach. It doesn't get any clearer. First time general penalty, second time DQ.

Q.May I play music?

A.Yes. However, you may not do so if the purpose is to eliminate distractions or help you with your swing. You should also show consideration to others (see Rule 4.3a(4) and Rule 1.2).
What an absolutely bizarre ruling! How on earth is that supposed to be policed?
"Why are you listening to music?"
I like it, helps me concentrate.
"Turn it off."

"Why are you listening to music?"
Dunno?
"Ok fine, carry on."

:ROFLMAO:

Getting away with breaches of many rules is open to the dishonest amongst us. An evasive answer doesn't make a rule bizarre.

I'm trying to say that it's too vague to police. Not that someone would be dishonest, but they've just decided they like listening to music while playing - subconsciously that may be helping them concentrate but they don't even realise it. It's not black and white is it? If you say it just blocks out external noises like the wind or traffic, or you just prefer music to silence? Do they both constitute helping you concentrate or does one but not the other? Utterly daft.

I wouldn't worry too much. Because, what is more bizarre is the thought of any player listening to music during a competition. People would ask questions. Why do you do that? They could be really rude and just say "I like the artist, and prefer it to talking to you guys", or they could say "apologies, but it just calms my nerves". Either the person ends up looking like an cretin, or they admit a rule break. Either way, they don't come out of it well.

In a match, presumably you can insist they remove the earphones, as even if they say it isnt for calming or a game focus reason, they are impeding you from legitimate, well, not sledging, put a bit of psychological verbals as a legitimate matchplay tactic ?

A player has no rules authority to insist an opponent remove earphones. They can either seek a ruling or not.

My hearing aids can receive music from my phone. How can you check if someone is listening to music.

I'd walk off if someone I was playing with was listening to music during a round.

I wonder what's next ? Maybe ignite a portable bbq and cook lunch?

Well what about Growing the Game?

With that attitude it’s no wonder golf has a stuffy reputation! ?

Thats not preventing growing the game. That's doing something additional while playing a game.

Another sports you play and want to play music while you're doing it? ?

I could have kept wicket with a ghetto blaster behind me perhaps? HOWZAT? Umpire says, sorry, couldn't hear a nick while that music was playing:ROFLMAO:

I was just joking. I’m certainly not one for playing any sport, least of all golf, with music blaring out and I’m not at all for it

And the whole ‘growing the game’ thing is pretty cynical - primarily used by those who make money out of the sport

But I’m sure I’m in a small minority there ?

Surely an etiquette issue rather than a rules infringement. If I was drawn to play with someone and they used headphones whilst playing my opinion of them would not be great. Golf is meant to be a social game that we don't play to earn a living.
And if I could hear it, then there would be one polite request to turn it off, and if refused, I wouldn't play with that person.
If you can't escape music when playing golf, then we are finished?
