Quick question...

I was at the local GC last night where the 2nd and 3rd run parallel to each other. On the 3rd I hit a bad slice off the tee and I watched it sail over onto the 2nd fairway. There was another group coming up the second and one of them was walking towards where I assumed my ball had landed.

He then played the ball that had a nice lie right in the middle of the fairway, then shouted over saying there's yours in the rough.

When I got to the rough it turns out it was his ball. I told him I think he'd hit mine and when he got to the green and looked at what he'd hit, he just shouted "yeh this is yours, just use that one"

What happens in this situation?

Depends...

If you were playing a ProV1 and he was playing a Pinnacle Gold, I woudl promptly pick up his ball, walk over to him, demand your ball back (it's your property after all!) and if he refuses, punch him in the mouth, then take your ball back.

If he was playing a top quality ball and yours was the pinnacle/donnay etc...then walk away happy you've scored a nice ball. :D

The dude had no right to play your ball and unless you were both playing the exact same ball with same markings, go and get your ball back! This is why I don't use the usual "three dots" type thing to mark my balls. I wright my playing number on mine (#27) or sign them because it's unique and can't be mistaken for someone else's ball.

I would insist on getting my ball back, what ever, and that he walk back down the fairway and replace it where it was. It is what he should do. If he didn't, then he is a knob, and if he won't give it back there would be trouble.

Well mine was a new Titleist So Lo ball which was used for the 1st time on the 1st hole... His was a pretty knackered Titleist NXT which a company logo down the side.

When I told him he'd hit mine he said, "No I didn't mine was a Titleist". Oh yeh I forgot you're the only person in the world who uses a Titleist ball...

I always said it was a mistake letting "ordinary people" play golf. :D :D :D

:D

Wizzle - the guy sounds like a first class douchebag. I would have gone to get my ball back regardless. I may not have punched him in the mouth, but I *might* have had a few choice words for him.

I’ve played the wrong ball a couple of times.

The first time was when I had just started playing and didn’t really know the rules. It was during a medal at my old club and was playing off 22 and was playing with a guy off 6. I was having the round of my playing career at the time all 4 months of it and could do nothing wrong, chipped in a few times sank a few monster putts and this other guy was having a mare. On the last par five we both hit drives to the same sort of place but he was much further on. He goes to where his ball should be and I’m back 20 yards looking for mine. So he says your playing a Srixon aren’t you? This is yours here, so go up chuffed that it had gone further than I thought and hit it out the rough. He says I think that was my ball, yours is back there, that’s a 2 shot penalty!!!

The other guy in the group was horrified that the 6 handicapper had done this and walked in and told the sec what this other bloke had done.

Now that’s what you call a douche!

Still shot good score despite this and got cut to 18 and the other guy got a right ticking off.

The other time was my fault same make of ball same markings different number, gutted, when I walked forward 10 yards and found my ball!!!

That was pretty low but you should still have checked that it was your ball before you hit it...

I played at St Mellion one year, stood on the 1st tee and announced to my playing partners what ball I was playing.
Nobody said anything about it so I knocked one down the middle.
Got to my ball, hit my second shot and then one of the other players said "that was my ball".
I asked why and he said the ball he was looking at didn't have a logo on it.
He had teed off with the same ball as me but had an HSBC logo on it or something similar. The logo must have been facing away from me when I hit what I thought was my ball.
Prat!!
